Panaji: In a bid to prepare 10,000 grafts of local varieties of mangoes, farmer Nestor Rangel who has a mango orchard in Valpoi, has offered to purchase seeds of the king of fruits from other farmers across Goa. “Goan varieties of mango are slowly dwindling and there are many that don’t even make it to the market because they’re not as well-known as the Mancurad. The idea behind buying the seeds and propagating them is to distribute various mango varieties throughout the state,” he said. Grafting is a method of plant propagation that joins plant parts from different plants together so that they will grow as one plant. Rangel has so far collected about 4,000 seeds of varying local mango varieties and is in the process of preparing the grafts. Of the 10,000 grafts that he intends to prepare, 3,000 will be of the Cardozo mango variant alone. Last year, Rangel had made 2,000 of the same. The remaining 7,000 varieties of mango grafts will entail various Goan mango variants like Hilario, Xavier, Mancurad, Jesuíta, Malgessa, Malgoa, Monserrate de Bardez, Monserrate de Salcete and Oliveira among others. “I am dedicating a space in my farm where only Goan varieties of mangoes will be planted. There are about 25-30 such variants and two to three grafts of each will be planted in this place,” he said. The rest will be given out for sale to other farmers, he said.
