State receives spells of rain

Panaji: Goa received light to moderate rainfall accompanied by lightning on Thursday with no major incident reported in the last 24 hours, according to the state disaster management authority.The India Meteorological Department had issued a heavy rainfall alert at isolated places on Thursday and Friday due to presence of a trough in the lower levels passing through Karnataka and upper cyclonic circulation over north Tamil Nadu, resulting in bad weather accompanied by clouds, heavy rains and thundershowers.As per rainfall data released by the IMD on Thursday, the state on an average has received 0.6mm rainfall against the normal rains of 3.2mm in the last 24 hours. Quepem recorded the highest rainfall of 4mm followed by Sanguem 0.9mm.“All the rain gauge stations have recorded 40-50% rainfall in the last 24 hours. The rainfall distribution was scattered which will continue on Friday with heavy rains at isolated places and thereafter the rainfall intensity will reduce,” the IMD scientist Rahul M said.Fishermen are advised not to venture along and off South Maharashtra-Goa coast for next 24 hours due to squally weather conditions.

PANAJI: Old Goa police on Monday apprehended Eric Henry Vaz, 37, who allegedly cheated many persons of Rs 100 crore across the country, said North Goa SP Nidhin Valsan on Monday.Valsan said that Vaz is wanted in a cheating case registered at Golabari police station (Kolkata) and in other offences registered at Bengaluru, Mumbai, Pune, Uttar Pradesh and other places for alleged fraud of over Rs 100 crore.“In the present case at Golabari, the accused is the sole proprietor of a firm named Gold Hill and was trading of coal and forex. Vaz invited investments from the public and he was entrusted with their funds, misappropriated the money. He cheated investors of over Rs 7 crore at Howrah, Kolkata, alone,” Valsan said.

PANAJI: The preliminary meeting of the House committee to study issues related to the Mhadei water diversion is scheduled on February 8 at 3.30pm. The 12-member committee is headed by WRD minister Subhash Shirodkar.The other members of the committee include Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai, MLAs from BJP, Congress, MGP, AAP, RG and independent MLAs.Sardesai and Curtorim MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco had written to Shirodkar to call an immediate meeting of the House committee following Union home minister Amit Shah’s statement that BJP has resolved a three-decade old issue by providing water to Karnataka with the help of Goa government.During the recently concluded winter session of the state legislative assembly, chief minister Pramod Sawant had announced a 12-member committee following demands by opposition MLAs.Former CM and ex-speaker Pratapsingh Rane had said, “The House committee must take a quick decision. We are waiting for a quick decision from the committee, else they will go ahead with the work.”

Panaji: The artefacts at Lokotsav 2023 have a bigger scope of getting sold as Goa is a tourist state, said chief minister Pramod Sawant at the inauguration of the national-level folk festival at Kala Academy.The annual festival, which is being held after a two-year break, gives a platform to traditional craftspersons and folk artistes from across the country to display and sell their art. Governor of Rajasthan Kalraj Mishra, who was present for the inauguration, said such a festival exhibits India’s diversity.Twelve states— Rajasthan, Assam, Manipur, Gujarat, Odisha, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Haryana and Goa—are participants.Sawant reiterated the Prime Minister’s ‘Vocal for Local’ slogan and said that local products should also reach global markets. Through the soon to be held G-20 summit, the government of India will try to market locally made products globally, he added.

Panaji: Eleven years after Mumbai resident Anuj Amarnath Jha allegedly rode in a rash and negligent manner in Porvorim, resulting in the death of his pillion rider, he has been acquitted by a North Goa court.The court found that the investigating officer did not record the statements of crucial and independent witnesses, many of whom had gathered at the spot of the accident.The owner of a four-wheeler had filed a complaint stating that as he was driving along with his son and daughter from Panaji to Siolim, a scooter came from the Mapusa side in speed and crossed the divider line and dashed into his car. The pillion rider, a 21-year-old resident of Mumbai, succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment at GMC. The court found that the prosecution did not examine the daughter of the complainant and occupant of the four-wheeler and did not inquire who was driving the car at the time of the accident. The prosecution completely relied on the statement/version of the complainant “although people were present and had gathered at the spot”, the court observed.The prosecution admitted that there was no examination of any other independent witness besides the family members and occupants of the four-wheeler.“It is also pertinent to note that the road at the accident spot is a busy NH Highway, people were present and had gathered at the spot at the time of alleged accident,” the court said. “…however no independent witness has been examined by the IO/PW8 to prove that the accused rode his Aviator scooter in a rash and negligent manner so as to endanger human life and on account of which he dashed against the said car which resulted in the said accident or to prove that the accused was riding the said Aviator scooter in high speed.”An eyewitness, who “would have been the crucial witness in this matter”, who was proceeding in front of the four-wheeler on his motorcycle was also not examined.
