After two years of lull, Bondla zoo is seeing a rise in the numbers of visitors, especially on the weekends. The summer holidays have also brought the children back to the zoo. The zoo authorities used the lockdowns and other restrictions over the past two years to renovate and improvise the zoo surroundings. “We have made special enclosures that have a viewing glass to allow small kids to view the animal. We have seen many parents trying to carry kids over the enclosure. Hence we have put toughened glass barriers in many enclosures. There are new methods we are using to make the zoo look as if it’s a part of the wild, yet keeping the enclosures safe for visitors,” says an official from the zoo. “This is the first time we have managed to breed porcupines in captivity,” says the official, adding that the zoo is supposed to get a tiger from the Nagpur zoo. “Bondla zoo is the only zoo in Goa and we are in the process of developing its collection of fauna to display them in the most natural environment,” says A Jabestin, Deputy Conservator of Forests, Wildlife and Ecotourism.
