YouTuber Roddur Roy held in Goa for ‘derogatory’ remarks against Mamata Banerjee

The Kolkata police Tuesday arrested YouTuber Roddur Roy in Goa for making ‘derogatory’ remarks against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.“Roddur Roy has been arrested in Goa and will be brought to Kolkata on transit remand,” a senior Kolkata police official told The Indian Express. Roy had reportedly made the remarks during a Facebook live programme.A case was filed against Roy by Trinamool spokesperson Riju Dutta at the Chitpur police station, the police said. Roy had conducted a Facebook live mocking Banerjee’s literary award. He is known for his controversial social media posts.Complaints had filed against Roy at different police stations in Kolkata. Dutta in his complaint had said that Roy was a repeat offender and had “maligned the state of West Bengal” and “perennially uses derogatory remarks against our police force.” The vlogger allegedly hurled abuses at Banerjee, Trinamool Congress MPs and also the Kolkata Police.

Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Sunday said that his government will crack down on drunk driving in the state and soon there will be checks in the state after 10 pm. The announcement comes days after three men from Belagavi died in a road accident in Mapusa.“Eight days back three youths from Belagavi died on the spot in an accident that took place early in the morning at 4 am. To stop drunk driving, there will be strict alcohol meter checking after 10 pm. We are thinking of bringing about reforms in our Police Act to crack down completely on drunk driving. Nobody will be able to drink and drive, which will be a safety measure for themselves.”He said that his government will also crack down on illegal massage parlours. “We will take action against illegal massage parlours. I have already instructed the police department that all illegal massage parlours will be shut down from tomorrow. Only those who have a spa license and beauty parlour license, those who are registered with the health, police and tourism department, will be allowed to run. In Ayurvedic panchakarma centres, massage parlours, there should be Ayurvedic practitioners.”Sawant visited the Calangute beach, a popular tourist draw on Sunday, took stock of security concerns in the area, and interacted with lifeguards and traffic police. He said, “I have given additional instructions for the safety of tourists coming into the state. We will be continuously monitoring and there will be additional coastal and traffic police force. Whether it is cases of prostitution, touts, hawkers, there will be strict action against such activities and they will not be allowed here. Those who promote such activities will be arrested. We are bringing about reforms and amendments in the Tourism Act also and the home department’s Policing Act also. We are coming up with an App where tourists can register their complaints and the police can take action.”He said that on World Environment Day, he wanted to assure tourists from all over the world that Goa was a safe tourist destination. Sawant visited the coastal belt of North Goa on Sunday with Shobhit Saksena, Superintendent of Police, North Goa, after media reports of rising crimes in the state.

The Telangana government on Friday announced an ex gratia payment of Rs 3 lakh each to the kin of those who died in an accident in Karnataka’s Kalaburagi district in the morning. A financial assistance of Rs 50,000 to all those who suffered injuries in the accident was also announced.Seven people were charred to death and many others suffered injuries after the bus they were travelling in collided with a goods vehicle at Kamlapura town of Kalaburagi district on Friday morning.Hyderabad-based Arjun Kumar along with family and friends had gone to Goa to celebrate his daughter’s birthday. All the passengers on the bus were returning to their homes in Hyderabad from Goa.Expressing shock and grief, Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao has instructed Health Minister T Harish Rao and minister T Srinivas Yadav to oversee the shifting of the bodies to their native places in coordination with officials.Karnataka Transport Minister B Sriramulu said, “On Friday morning at 6.30am, the bus that started from Goa to Hyderabad met with an accident, following which it caught fire, and seven people including two children have died.”Kalaburgi superintendent of police Isha Pant visited the accident spot and the hospitals and inquired about the condition of the injured passengers. Speaking to The Indian Express, Pant said, “We are conducting a detailed inquiry into the accident. All the injured passengers are being treated in hospitals. Seven passengers of a private bus were charred to death in an accident in the Kamalapura town of Kalaburagi district in north Karnataka on Friday morning.Police said that around 29 passengers were travelling on the bus from Goa to Hyderabad. “According to the preliminary investigation, the fire followed an accident involving the bus and a goods vehicle. All the injured have been admitted to various hospitals in Kalaburagi,” a police officer said.Superintendent of police Isha Pant visited the accident spot and the hospitals and inquired about the condition of the injured passengers. Speaking to The Indian Express, Pant said, “We are conducting a detailed inquiry into the accident. All the injured passengers are being treated in hospitals.
