Parts of Goa receive rain after Cyclone Asani

Panaji: Parts of Goa received light to moderate rainfall late evening on Wednesday as a ripple effect of Cyclone Asani in the Bay of Bengal. The India meteorological department (IMD) earlier forecast scattered light rainfall activity over the state for May 11. “The trough was passing close to the eastern coast of the country, and its movement has caused wind patterns to change over Goa. The lower levels of the atmosphere were getting westerly moisture incursion, whereas the middle troposphere was getting moisture from the eye of the cyclone as well, leading to the light rainfall activity over Goa,” IMD scientist, Rahul M said. There were no instances of lightning or significant windspeeds that could have damaging effects that were reported. The system is slowly moving away, as a result of which, the windspeed is expected to weaken, IMD said. “The light rainfall activity will continue for two more days owing to the ongoing phenomenon,” Rahul said. The maximum temperature recorded on Wednesday was 32.6C, thus showing a fall from the past 24 hours. On Tuesday, IMD had recorded maximum temperature of 33.2C. There is no drastic fall in maximum temperatures expected beyond this, IMD said.

Panaji: The monsoon may hit Goa marginally earlier this year, as India meteorological department (IMD) said on Friday that it will reach Kerala around May 27, a few days earlier than the normal onset date of May 1. Even as the IMD issues a forecast for the monsoon’s onset over Kerala, it doesn’t predict its progression as it moves north towards Goa. This is because the monsoon’s progress depends on factors such as strength of the current and localised weather features. “The normal onset date of monsoon over Kerala is June 1 and normal date of progress of monsoon over Goa is June 5. This year, monsoon onset is likely over Kerala 4-5 days ahead of its normal date,” IMD scientist Rahul M said. The prediction of May 27 is subject to a model error of plus or minus four days. Rahul said that the data from the past decade or so suggests that there’s no correlation between the monsoon’s arrival in Kerala and its reaching Goa. “There are several examples to show that there may not always be a four-day gap between monsoon onset over Kerala and monsoon advance over Goa,” he said. “Two years – 2017 and 2018 – the monsoon onset was before the normal date over Kerala, but it arrived over Goa two to three days later than the normal date. Whereas in 2021, it arrived on the normal date over Goa, even though the onset date over Kerala was two days late,” he said.

TCP board, conservation committee reconstituted

Panaji: The government of Goa has re-constituted the Goa Town and Country Planning (TCP) board and TCP’s Conservation Committee with the notification being issued on Friday. TCP minister Vishwajit Rane will head both the entities while chief town planner Rajesh Naik will serve as the member secretary. The TCP board has representatives from the Union ministries of defense, surface transport and tourism. The state government has also included representatives from the Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) along with architect Rajiv Sukhtankar. The secretaries of the departments of TCP, industries, panchayats, planning, and urban development will also serve on the board. Aside from the heads of several government departments, the government has also included representatives from the Indian Institute of Architects, Institute of Engineers-India, Institute of Town Planners and Confederation of Real Estate Developer Association of India (CREDAI) on the TCP’s conservation committee. Two MLAs will also serve on the TCP board, but the government has not notified the names of the two MLAs.

Aguada sand bar to remain closed

Panaji: Owing to the period of foul season in Goa, starting May 21, the Aguada sand bar will remain closed for all inland traffic vessels till September 15, the Captain of Ports (CoP) department informed on Thursday. “This is annually done due to the monsoon season. The barges are not permitted on the route,” CoP James Braganza’s told TOI. In addition to this, the lighthouses of Malim, Campal, Tejo Front, Tejo Rear, Reis Magos and Aguada beacon will cease to function from 12am on June 1, until further notice.

More schemes if salt production is under agri

Panaji: Agriculture minister Ravi Naik on Thursday said that if the industries department permits, he is ready to bring salt production under the agriculture department to enable traditional salt producers to avail of various government schemes. Salt production presently falls within the ambit of the industries department. Naik said he would speak to industries minister Mauvin Godinho in this regard and about the issues salt producers face. Regarding damage to crops due to unseasonal rain, the agriculture minister said he has asked officials to assess the damage and ensure that farmers are compensated for the losses. He also said some MLAs have made representations to him about crop loss, and added that it is the state’s duty to help farmers.

Will focus on infra at industrial estates

Panaji: Given that the monsoon season is around the corner, the Goa Industrial Development Corporation can do little to improve the infrastructure at the 20 industrial estates in Goa, said GIDC chairman Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco. Assuring industrialists that the GIDC remains focused on strengthening infrastructure, Lourenco said that it would take another six months to repair the roads and ensure adequate water supply to all units. While he did not directly name his predecessor Glen Ticlo, he did say that Goa’s industrial estates have taken a beating while the GIDC’s finances are also depleted. “Some of the industrial estates don’t even have proper water or roads,” Lourenco said. He said that the GIDC’s financial situation is bad because of the loan taken by the corporation to buy back the SEZ land. “We will see that we bring some industries to Goa this time. If everything goes well, then in six months we will show results. You have to ruffle some feathers to get the required results. By next week our proposals will be going based on what every industrial estate requires,” he said. He said that instead of focusing on allotting industrial plots, he wants to focus on improving basic infrastructure so that Goa can attract new manufacturing units. “If there is no infrastructure, then industries will not come,” said Lourenco. He has also directed the GIDC officials to clear all pending applications within eight days and also said that any allegations of corruption will be severely dealt with.
