Woman rescued after attempting suicide in Goa, infant daughter found dead at home

A woman from Chicalim in South Goa allegedly killed her one-year-old daughter and attempted suicide on Saturday, Goa Police officials said. The woman, who had allegedly slashed her wrists and tried to end her life after jumping off the bridge over the Zuari river, was rescued and moved to the Goa Medical College (GMC) and Hospital for treatment.Police officials said after the woman was rescued and inquiries were made about her home and family, police officials visited her residence where they found her 14-month-old daughter dead. While the cause of child’s death is yet to be ascertained, it is suspected that she was strangled to death. Police officials said that an offence of murder (Section 302, IPC) and Section 8 of the Goa Children’s Act had been registered at the Vasco Police Station.“The motive behind the child’s killing or the cause of her death is not known. We are trying to find out. The investigation is going on and we will have to wait for the post-mortem report,” a police official said.Police officials said that the woman’s husband worked abroad and she had recently returned after visiting him. The woman was rescued after a construction worker spotted her jumping off the bridge in the early hours of Saturday and the police were informed.

Panaji: Health minister Vishwajit Rane said on Wednesday that the state government would sign a tripartite memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai, and the Union government, to seek their guidance in setting up the proposed Cancer Institute of Goa.The Tata Memorial Hospital is one of the world's largest cancer care facilities, and is supported by the Union government's department of atomic energy. Rane’s announcement came after a meeting with Union health secretary Rajesh Bhushan and state health secretary Y V V J Rajasekhar to discuss various issues pertaining to the health services in Goa.Rane said that Bhushan promised to support the upgrade of the tertiary cancer centre to a state cancer institute. “He has advised us to send a proposal, along with referrals,” said Rane.The foundation stone for the cancer centre was laid on August 1. The project itself was initiated a few years ago, and the state is being assisted financially by the Union government.Rane said that Bhushan appreciated the Goa government’s policy of approving HPV vaccination for girls of the 9-14 age group for the prevention of cervical cancer.Goa Medical College (GMC) has a unit for cancer patients and also a day centre for chemotherapy, led by Dr Anupama Borkar.Before that, most cancer patients needing treatment were referred to certain private hospitals or centres outside Goa.Rane said that at Wednesday’s meeting, they also discussed the digitisation of health records. “It will ensure that the records of all patients, but chiefly of far-flung primary health centres, are properly documented,” Rane said.Digital documentation, he said, will ensure that records are maintained in one place, which will help in the preventive care as well as treatment of patients.Rane said that the Union health ministry would soon send a team of officials to understand Goa’s special needs, including the upgradation of the South Goa district hospital, with a separate medical college as per the model advised by Niti Aayog.“The ministry will also depute officers from AIIMS for the upgradation of the STEMI programme in Goa,” Rane added.

(Representational)Panaji: Fifty five per cent of the voters exercised their franchise in the Goa panchayat polls till 2 pm on Wednesday, as per the State Election Commission.Polling was underway for 186 panchayat bodies in Goa since 8 am on Wednesday and will conclude at 5 pm.A total of 5,038 candidates are contesting the panchayat polls from 1,464 wards across the coastal state.There are 3,85,867 voters in North Goa and 4,11,153 in South Goa, as per official data.Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant was among the early voters. MARGAO: South Western Railway (SWR) will run special trains between Vasco and Velankanni to facilitate passengers from Goa to travel to the shrine town for novenas in August and September. Train no. 07357 Vasco– Velankanni Express Special will depart from Vasco at 9am on August 27 and arrive at Velankanni at 12.25pm the next day. Train no. 07358 Velankanni– Vasco Express Special will depart from Velankanni at 11.45pm on August 28 and arrive at Vasco at 4am on August 30. Also, train no. 07359 Vasco– Velankanni Express Special will depart from Vasco at 2.30pm on September 2 and arrive at Velankanni at 7.10pm the next day. Train No. 07360 Velankanni – Vasco Express Special will depart from Velankanni at 9.15am on September 4 and arrive at Vasco at 10am the next day. Margao: In a third incident in a span of four days of rescuing runaway children, Railway Protection Force (RPF) at Margao railway station, on Tuesday, helped two minor children, who appeared to be lost, by providing protective care and safe custody. During one of their routine patrolling rounds on Monday, RPF personnel Rajendra Prasad Yadav, Anil Kumar and Rinkoo Yadav noticed two minor girls, who appeared to be lost and in a state of panic on platform no 2 at Margao railway station. Upon inquiring with them, the RPF personnel realised that there was something amiss and brought them to the Child Help Desk Centre with the help of Childline NGO.The minor girls told the RPF that they were from Bishunganj, Gaya, Bihar, and that they had left their home without informing their parents. They were produced before the chairperson of the Child Welfare Committee, South Goa, and after completion of their medical checkup admitted in children’s protective home, Apna Ghar, Merces.Last week, in two separate incidents, RPF personnel had rescued five children, including two minor girls, found lost at Margao and Tivim railway stations. The two minor girls were sisters and appeared abandoned by their mother at the Margao railway station. RPF routinely rescues minor children under the operation ‘Nanhe Farishte’, which consists of a dedicated team of rescuers to identify children vulnerable to trafficking and help them reunite with their parents or guardians.

Vasco: A person died after falling from the third floor of a building at Dabolim on Monday. Vasco police suspect that the person might have slipped and fallen.Vasco PI Kapil Nayak told TOI that the person has been identified as Pradip Bhuvad, 40, and was employed in a hotel.Sub-inspector Ganesh Matondkar said that Bhuvad was alone in his apartment when the incident occured at 5.45pm. The victim was unmarried, and was living in the apartment owned by his mother.The body has been sent for a postmortem to Goa Medical College. tnn
