Rain back after 20 days, to get heavier this week: IMD

Panaji: After a prolonged weak spell of 20 days, Goa experienced widespread precipitation over the past couple of days. Canacona recorded the highest rainfall of 72.8mm during the 24 hours till Saturday morning. While other centres recorded mostly moderate rainfall, this was the wettest 24-hour spell of 40.3mm the IMD, Panaji, recorded since the 80.8mm on July 17.“Though the shear zone weakened into a circulation over northeast and east central Arabian sea in the past 24 hours, an offshore trough from south Maharashtra coast to Kerala coast along with a circulation over Bay of Bengal brought normal rainfall during the past 24 hours,” said Rahul M, scientist, IMD, Panaji. On Saturday morning, besides Canacona, Sanquelim recorded a near-heavy rainfall of 59.8mm, Pernem 45.8mm, Margao 43.8mm, Sanguem 41.8mm, Panaji 40.3mm, Old Goa 39.8mm, Mapusa 34mm and other centres on a lesser scale. The rainfall activity brought some relief, as the seasonal total rose to 2,080.3mm, while 2,154.3mm is considered normal. The shortfall, which had risen to 4.1% on Friday, was reduced to 3.4% on Friday.IMD-Panaji has forecast heavy rainfall at a few places and very heavy rainfall at isolated places on Saturday and Sunday. While heavy rainfall is very likely at isolated places on Monday, it may be heavy in a few places on Tuesday and Wednesday.“The monsoon will be normal in the next few days with a low pressure area related to cyclonic circulation prevailing over north coastal Andhra Pradesh and adjacent areas of Bay of Bengal likely to form during next 24 hours,” the IMD scientist said. The offshore trough at mean sea level from south Maharashtra to north Kerala and the cyclonic circulation over northeast Arabian Sea will further strengthen the monsoon current.

CANACONA: As part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, a mega Tiranga Mahotsav will be held at Canacona on Saturday. Speaker Ramesh Tawadkar said that celebrations have been planned at the three main state borders of Patradevi, Castlerock and Polem. “The responsibility for the Polem celebration is with Canconcars”, Tawadkar said. “It is equally important that ‘desh bhakti’ is generated amongst all the citizens of our country and that citizens become responsible,” he said, adding that Canacona too, will participate in the nationwide patriotic celebration with fervour. According to organisers, more than 2,000 college and school students will participate in the various programs, some of which are scheduled to be held simultaneously from Polem to Palolem. There are about eight to 10 freedom fighters from the taluka who are still alive. All may not participate in the celebrations, organisers said, as some are living elsewhere in the country and the movement of some others has been limited due to age. As part of the celebration, over 100 students will visit places at Angadi-Majali in the neighbouring Karwar district of Karnataka where once the Azad Gomantak Dal and Goa National Congress fought for freedom. Principal of the Shree Mallikarjun College and program in-charge, Manoj Kamat, said that Tawadkar will welcome the torch-bearing contingent that will light a torch at Polem following which school students will sing patriotic songs and a march past will be held. There will also be a street play and Run for Tiranga competition. The Tiranga Mahotsav is being jointly celebrated by the directorate of higher education in association with the Shree Mallikarjun College and the deputy collector (Canacona) supported by the directorate of education and Taluka Level Steering Committee (TLSC).

Panaji: Volunteers of the Save Old Goa Action Committee have temporarily suspended their ongoing satyagraha owing to heavy rainfall warnings. The volunteers are protesting the illegal structure in the world heritage site of Old Goa and demanding its demolition. The protest had completed 223 days till July 5.“Due to heavy rainfall, it has been very windy and we want to avoid any potential disastrous situation,” said the committee’s treasurer Hugo Gonsalves. “We will resume the agitation when the weather condition improves.”The agitation was initially suspended on a temporary basis for three weeks owing to the extended rainfall warning. However, with the progress of monsoon and increase in rainfall, the suspension has been further postponed, indefinitely. The Save Old Goa Action Committee will attend a hearing in the matter of the illegal bungalow on August 17 at the directorate of panchayats in Panaji. TOI had earlier reported that citizens across Goa expressed their disapproval over the illegal construction by holding protests and large gatherings in solidarity with the activists leading the protest. The protestors had also started an indefinite hunger strike from November 23, 2021, onwards demanding that the government revokes the licenses and demolishes the illegal structure. On a daily basis, the protest would see about seven to eight protestors at the site, at the precincts of St Cajetan Church, with a bigger crowd showing solidarity on the weekends.
