Staff ReporterPondaAnnouncing that the state’s hazardous waste facility at Pissurlem will be ready within one-and-a-half-month, while construction waste management facility at Kudchire too is taking shape, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Friday claimed that Goa will be the number one state in the country to work at such a level in waste management.“Goa is the only state in the country which is doing so much work in waste management and if ranking is done, Goa will be number one state in this regard,” said Sawant at Kundaim after inaugurating a biomedical waste facility. Minister for Science and Technology and Waste Management Atanasio ‘Babush’ Monserrate, Goa State Pollution Control Board chairman Mahesh Patil, Goa Waste Management Corporation managing director Levinson Martins were present among others.The Chief Minister stated that the government is seriously working on waste management strategy to rid the state of garbage menace by setting up separate waste treatment facilities for construction and industrial waste.He claimed that the government in the past 25 to 30 years failed to even think over waste management in the country, which has resulted in Sonsoddo-like garbage hills in the state. “Clearing those will now require crores of rupees, which could have been avoided or managed by spending very small amounts in the past if planned effectively,” the Chief Minister said.He informed that the biomedical treatment unit will cater to a large number of medical and healthcare facilities in the state, thereby resolving the issue of disposal of such waste. The Chief Minister lauded the efforts of Goa Waste Management Corporation in setting up the common biomedical waste treatment plant in a record time of 11 months.He also informed that the government is setting up facilities for construction waste at Kudchire and for industrial waste at Pissurlem, thereby trying to achieve effective waste management system.In his speech, Monserrate expressed happiness as the government has managed to set up the biomedical waste treatment facility at Kundaim much ahead of the scheduled date of completion. The facility has been developed under a PPP model where the Goa Waste Management Corporation has provided land of 10,000 square metres to the concessionaire Biotic Waste Solutions Pvt. Ltd., which will operate the facility.Meanwhile, with an aim of attracting more environment-friendly industries in the state, under ease of doing business, the government is planning to grant permission to such industries within one to one-and-a-half-month, Sawant said during his speech at Kundaim.Presently, it is taking nearly one year and more to grant permission to such industries and if such a long time is taken for granting the permission, these units will look at moving to other places, he stated.
