Staff ReporterDivarCumbharjua MLA Rajesh Faldessai has vowed to revive agriculture by encouraging farming in fields left fallow and rejuvenate water bodies in the constituency within a year.“I will restore and rejuvenate all the water bodies in the constituency,’’ Faldessai said on Friday after inspecting the same. He also promised to repair bunds and sluice gates in Khazan lands on apriority basis.The MLA carried out an inspection of the damaged sluice gates at Divar Islands and Carambolim.He assured that bunds prone to breach will be repaired and submerged fields will be drained so that cultivation can be undertaken by the farm land owners who had rendered them fallow. The repair of bunds will be initiated through the water resources department, he added.“Within a year, I will take up repair of the bunds that have affected the villages of Divar, St. Estevam and Cumbharjua. This will not only help revive agriculture in the fertile lands of these villages but also protect vulnerable areas of Divar, Vanxim, St. Estevam, Dhauji and the other low-lying areas from inundating,” he pointed out.“People cannot travel and the ferries cannot dock due to the gushing water overflowing on to the roads, jetties and bunds. People residing in these areas have been airing their grievances that the bunds need to be repaired. The height of the roads needs to be increased, and bunds need to be reinforced to prevent flooding,” he proposed.He promised that awareness will be created amongst the farmers in a bid to revive agriculture in the constituency and important works regarding conservation.
