Guv: Will form panel to look into patients requiring dialysis

MARGAO: Governor P S Sreedharan Pillai on Saturday said the Raj Bhavan will constitute an expert committee to investigate the reasons for the high number of patients requiring dialysis in Canacona and Fatorpa areas and also to provide solutions. Pillai said he would try his best to resolve this with the help of the state and the central government. He visited Saptkoteshwar and Shantadurga Fatarpekarin temples at Fatorpa, Quepem, Babulshaha Pir Aulia Dargah and Mahadev temple in Kakoda, Guardian Angel Church, Curchorem and also interacted with newly elected sarpanchs and panchayat members of Quepem and Sanvordem as a part of his Sampurna Goa Yatra on Saturday. “Raj Bhavan will look into the demands of the people and redress the issues in its own way, and if required, these demands will also be sent to the central government for consideration,” the governor said.

Vasco: The department of legal metrology during a raid at Housing Board Colony, Zuarinagar, Vasco of BPCL domestic LPG cylinders, found 13 of the domestic LPG cylinders to be underweight.On Monday, people residing in Lamani Colony, Zuarinagar raised a protest after finding some cylinders brought for distribution were short in weight.Both the delivery person and driver of the distribution vehicle abandoned the truck and fled from the site after consumers confronted the duo.Following the uproar, assistant controller, legal metrology, South Zone-I Margao, Nitin Purushan along with his team rushed to the site and conducted a raid. Purushan said that necessary action will be initiated against the gas agency as per provisions of the legal metrology rules and acts. The department has advised consumers to check the weight of a cylinder before buying it and check the verification certificate issued by the department, and also urged citizens to lodge complaints on the designated number.

PANAJI: BJP South Goa in-charge and Union minister of state for skill development and entrepreneurship, electronics and IT, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, will hold a brainstorm meeting with BJP functionaries, ministers and MLAs at Margao to chalk out a plan to win the South Goa Lok Sabha parliamentary seat. Chandrasekhar will arrive in Goa on Tuesday on a two-day visit as part of the Lok Sabha Pravas programme. Colva: Colva police have arrested two residents of Housing Board, Gogol, for their alleged involvement in stealing items from a car.Wasim Sayed and Yasim Shaikh, both in their mid-thirties, broke open a car and decamped with a laptop and mobile chargers, all worth around Rs 80,000.Khaushid Shaikh from Quepem had lodged a complaint of theft against unidentified persons. After checking the CCTV footage from the vicinity, the police managed to identify the accused and nabbed them.Sources said the stolen property is yet to be recovered as one of the accused developed hypertension and had to be admitted to a hospital.

Sanjivani begins paying balance of first instalment to cane farmers

Ponda: Sanjivani sugar factory at Dayanandnagar Tisk in Dharbandora has begun paying the balance 20% compensation amount to its sugarcane farmers. The factory administration said that till Thursday, 133 farmers had been paid a total amount of Rs 54.2 lakh.Over 700 cane farmers are registered with Sanjivani. Of the 133 farmers, 30 are from Quepem, 27 from Sattari, 21 from Sanguem, 15 from Pernem and 39 from Canacona, factory administrator Satej Kamat told TOI.The first instalment of this year’s compensation was distributed in May. The government had sanctioned Rs 7.5 crore for the payment. Kamat said the government has sanctioned a further Rs 3.6 crore to pay the remaining instalment of the compensation. Cane farmers registered under the factory have been getting the compensation amount from the state government under the special assistance scheme to sugarcane cultivators, in lieu of the factory’s closure in 2019. While shutting down the factory, the government had assured farmers that they would receive compensation for five consecutive years, starting from 2020-21 at a rate of Rs 3,000 per metric tonne (MT) of canes for the first year. In the second year they will get Rs 2,800 per MT, Rs 2,600 for the third year, Rs 2,400 for the fourth year and a final Rs 2,200 for the fifth year.
