Ponda: Sanjivani sugar factory at Dayanandnagar Tisk in Dharbandora has begun paying the balance 20% compensation amount to its sugarcane farmers. The factory administration said that till Thursday, 133 farmers had been paid a total amount of Rs 54.2 lakh.Over 700 cane farmers are registered with Sanjivani. Of the 133 farmers, 30 are from Quepem, 27 from Sattari, 21 from Sanguem, 15 from Pernem and 39 from Canacona, factory administrator Satej Kamat told TOI.The first instalment of this year’s compensation was distributed in May. The government had sanctioned Rs 7.5 crore for the payment. Kamat said the government has sanctioned a further Rs 3.6 crore to pay the remaining instalment of the compensation. Cane farmers registered under the factory have been getting the compensation amount from the state government under the special assistance scheme to sugarcane cultivators, in lieu of the factory’s closure in 2019. While shutting down the factory, the government had assured farmers that they would receive compensation for five consecutive years, starting from 2020-21 at a rate of Rs 3,000 per metric tonne (MT) of canes for the first year. In the second year they will get Rs 2,800 per MT, Rs 2,600 for the third year, Rs 2,400 for the fourth year and a final Rs 2,200 for the fifth year.
