Charity Match on schedule, Pro League faces delay

Panaji: Despite the tumult within the Goa Football Association (GFA) with the high court of Bombay at Goa ending the tenure of president Churchill Alemao on Thursday, the association has announced that the Charity Match would be played as scheduled on Sunday. The Charity Match is a season-opening clash between last season's Goa Pro League champions Dempo Sports Club and runners-up Salgaocar FC. “A meeting of the committee chaired by Anthony Pango was held on Friday with Babli Mandrekar, Dominic Pereira, Minguel Gonsalves and Cosme Oliveira given the major organisational duties,” GFA general secretary Jovito Lopes said in a press release on Friday. While the Charity Match will be played as scheduled at the Duler Football Stadium on Sunday, there are question marks over the commencement of the Goa Pro League. “We will discuss the start of the league at our executive committee meeting on Monday. Several key decisions need to be taken, most importantly about the league,” said GFA acting president Anthony Pango. Already postponed twice and now scheduled to kick-off on September 17, sources said the start is likely to be delayed due to non-availability of funds. The GFA does not have a broadcast partner or sponsor for the league nor the money to meet the expenses. According to sources, the GFA is likely to discuss the “dire financial situation” with clubs and then take a final call. The acting president also needs to take a decide when the elections can be held with suggestions that the electoral process could take 45 to 60 days. Meanwhile, GFA said entry for the Charity Match will be with tickets for VVIP, Western and North stands, while no cards or complimentary passes will be allowed. “The GFA acting president appealed to football fans to turn up in large numbers since the match is this season's opener and a prelude to the Goa Professional League where Goa's top teams will participate,” the association said in a statement.
