Margao: Following the long victory lap that attracted public criticism for an extravagant swearing-in ceremony, MLAs from South Goa’s hinterlands are busy holding several programmes including public grievances meets and project launches. PWD minister Nilesh Cabral held a public grievances meeting at Quepem last week, an event which he said will be a regular feature every second Thursday of the month. Residents of Quepem will be allowed to put forth their complaints and grievances at the meeting. He said the elected representatives of local bodies along with officials of various government departments will be present at the meeting. “Attempts will be made to resolve most of the grievances on the spot. The deputy collector will be responsible to ensure that the complaints are acted upon at the earliest. The compliance report will be taken at the subsequent meetings,” Cabral told reporters. Sanvordem MLA Ganesh Gaonkar held a meeting with officials of various government departments and elected representatives of panchayats from his constituency to discuss pre-monsoon related works. He also took stock of the pending works and proposed projects in his constituency. “The issue of frequent power cuts was discussed with the engineers concerned of the electricity department and they have assured that they will work more effectively to tackle this issue,” he said. He further said WRD engineers were instructed to prepare proposals and estimates for works related to desilting and construction of retaining walls along the riverside, the banks of which had been damaged during the floods last year. Minister and Sanguem MLA Subhash Phal Dessai has also initiated development works in his constituency while inaugurating completed projects. Speaking at the ‘Sarkar Tumchea Dari’ programme held in Sanguem recently, Phal Dessai said every effort would be made to resolve issues pertaining to electricity, mobile network, drinking water, educational infrastructure, road networks, forest rights, and the Selaulim dam. Opposition MLAs have also stepped up the pace of development works. Quepem MLA Altone D’Costa who defeated former deputy chief minister Chandrakant Kavalekar at the last hustings, has been going about launching various infrastructural facilities. At the inauguration of a borewell at Bushmoll-Barcem, where people faced water woes, D’Costa said he would strive to resolve all issues pertaining to water scarcity in Quepem within the next few months. “I will try to ensure that basic amenities are provided to the people of Quepem constituency,” D’Costa said.
