Mercury drops, Panaji records season’s lowest temp of 19.6C

Panaji: Clear skies and favourable conditions pushed the mercury to the lowest of the season so far, as the India meteorological department (IMD), Panaji, recorded a minimum temperature of 19.6celsius which is the lowest of this season so far.However, the nip in the air may last just three days, as there is a possibility of light rain in isolated places after Sunday due to a depression.During this season, the minimum temperature had dropped to 20.4C on October 26. While the lowest ever minimum temperature for the city was 15.3C on November 29, 1964, last year the IMD had recorded 20.8C and 19C in November 2020.As per the IMD forecast, a low pressure area (LPA) had formed under the influence of cyclonic circulation over the south Andaman Sea and neighbouring area recently.The system is expected to intensify into a depression and is likely to move west-northwestwards towards north Tamil Nadu and Puducherry-south Andhra Pradesh coasts during the three next days.“With this system approaching ethe ast coast after three-four days, there is an early indication of increase in clouding after four days and also a rise in minimum temperature. Light rain is likely for two days after November 22,”Rahul M, scientist, IMD, Panaji, said.The minimum temperature may continue to be around 19C for about three days. While the impact of the depression on Goa’s weather is likely to be minimal, the mercury may rise by around two degrees after Monday.The day temperatures have been within the normal range over the last few days. November has been largely dry so far, as it rained only on November 3 and 7.

PANAJI: Appreciating Labour and Employment minister Atanasio Monserrate’s firm stand regarding the 130 striking workers of IFB Industries, Goa State Industries Association (GSIA) has asked union leaders and the opposition not to vitiate the friendly employer-employee relations in Goa. GSIA president Damodar Kochkar said that if Goa wants to attract private investment and create employment for locals, then a conducive environment is required. “This decisive stand taken by the minister in spite of pressure from labour leaders and politicians will send a clear message to the other companies and also to the employees to have cordial working relationship,” said Kochkar. “We feel the labour leaders and the opposition should not take advantage of the situation and vitiate the friendly employer-employee relations.” IFB Industries Ltd took over a sick unit at Verna Industrial Estate to begin manufacturing air conditioners a few years ago, competing with Chinese AC manufacturers. The company has created ancillary units in Goa which has in turn brought in additional investment and employment. “Friendly working atmosphere is a must to get more investment and generate more employment,” said Kochkar.

Pernem civic body pays protesting wage workers

Panaji: Daily wage workers of the Pernem Municipal Council withdrew their strike after the civic body paid them their wages. The delay in payment is said to be due to non-preparation of wage bills by an upper divisional clerk (UDC). The council could not pay salaries and wages of the municipal staff in time as the UDC was behind schedule in finishing his work, the civic body’s chairperson, Madhav Senai Desai, said. They will lodge a complaint against the UDC for lethargy in work, he added.“I have already brought the issue to the notice of the chief officer and will also bring the complaint before the director of municipal administration as we don’t want a repeat of what has happened. Work should not suffer due to the apathy of the clerk,” he said, adding that it was unfortunate that salaries and wages were delayed The daily wage workers did not work for half a day, but resumed duties after getting paid, he said.

Panaji: The high court of Bombay at Goa has granted interim bail to Vikat Bhagat accused of rape and murder of Irish national Danielle McLaughlin in 2017, to attend and perform the rites on the 11th and 12th day following the demise of his father at Canacona.Counsel Arun Bras De Sa, representing Bhagat, requested the interim bail on humanitarian grounds. His father died on November 15 and cremated without Bhagat’s presence, the court was told.Public prosecutor S G Bhobe pointed out Bhagat’s history but ultimately submitted that the state would not object to the interim bail provided he indicate precise timings. He added that necessary details would be provided to the jailer in advance so that reasonable arrangements can be made.

Panaji: Town and country planning (TCP) minister Vishwajit Rane on Friday directed forest and TCP officials to act against a Delhi resident who is involved in an illegal construction near the turtle nesting sites at Morjim. “Despite numerous inspections and stop work orders, one Sareen from Delhi is conducting illegal activities in an eco-sensitive zone without permissions, near the turtle nesting site in Morjim,” Rane said. “People who violate sensitive and eco-sensitive areas, particularly those who violate the TCP Act and the Forest Act, will face harsh penalties,” he said, adding that the Goa government will not tolerate violations or when residents of other states “take the government for granted”.“The forest department will adopt and strictly implement the report prepared by research scientist Sujeet Kumar Dongre on no-take zones and conservation areas to be notified by the forest department. More emphasis will be placed on areas near turtle nesting sites,” Rane said.The government has notified a handful of beaches in in Goa as the natural breeding habitats for Olive Ridley turtles.

FDA shuts Calangute eatery after food poisoning case

Panaji: The food and drugs administration (FDA) of Goa has shut down a restaurant in Calangute in wake of a food poisoning case.FDA officials inspected the premises of Punjabi Kitchen Bar and Restaurant, Calangute where the alleged food poisoning took place. A sample of the water and curry was drawn and a spot inspection report was issued. The restaurant has been shut down till further orders due to unhygienic conditions, the FDA stated. The inspection was conducted by food safety officers Rajaram Patil, Madhav Kavlekar and Bhakti Walke after the food poisoning complaint was received by FDA. The FDA also conducted an inspection at M/s Rohit Hotel at Porvorim and directed it to stop food business activities. This is the premises wherein a video of a cockroach in a samosa has been doing the rounds on social media.In another case, a bhel puri stall at Saligao was directed to shut down after it was found operating without Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) licence.
