MARGAO: Three persons, including a woman, died on the spot following a collision between two cars on Manohar Parrikar National highway bypass at Rajbhag-Tarir, Canacona, Wednesday evening. Several others sustained injuries – two among them are learnt to be critical – and are being treated in a hospital. Eyewitnesses told reporters that the driver of one of the cars involved that was proceeding towards Karwar, lost control after hitting the divider and the four-wheeler collided with an oncoming car on the other lane. A driver of one of the cars also sustained injuries. Incidentally, this is the 7th accident at this spot in recent times, eye witnesses said.
Vasco: The department of legal metrology during a raid at Housing Board Colony, Zuarinagar, Vasco of BPCL domestic LPG cylinders, found 13 of the domestic LPG cylinders to be underweight.On Monday, people residing in Lamani Colony, Zuarinagar raised a protest after finding some cylinders brought for distribution were short in weight.Both the delivery person and driver of the distribution vehicle abandoned the truck and fled from the site after consumers confronted the duo.Following the uproar, assistant controller, legal metrology, South Zone-I Margao, Nitin Purushan along with his team rushed to the site and conducted a raid. Purushan said that necessary action will be initiated against the gas agency as per provisions of the legal metrology rules and acts. The department has advised consumers to check the weight of a cylinder before buying it and check the verification certificate issued by the department, and also urged citizens to lodge complaints on the designated number.
PANAJI: BJP South Goa in-charge and Union minister of state for skill development and entrepreneurship, electronics and IT, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, will hold a brainstorm meeting with BJP functionaries, ministers and MLAs at Margao to chalk out a plan to win the South Goa Lok Sabha parliamentary seat. Chandrasekhar will arrive in Goa on Tuesday on a two-day visit as part of the Lok Sabha Pravas programme. He will visit the district office at Margao and meet the chairperson and councillors of the Margao Municipal Council and sarpanches, deputy sarpanches and elected representatives of South Goa panchayats and zilla parishad. Discussions will be held on the progress of Central government schemes in the region.
MARGAO: Shikhar Kalash Pratishthapana Suvarn Mahotsav will be celebrated at Shree Ramnath Damodar Saunsthan in Zambaulim from November 27 to December 2. Addressing reporters, president of the Saunsthan, Manjunath Pai Dukle, revealed details of the events lined up for the 6-day event. Shree Saunsthan Gokarn Partagali Jeevottam Mathadheesh Vidyadheesh Teerth Sripad Vader Swami will attend the Mahapoornahuti of Anushthan on December 2. Vijayrathotsav will be held on November 30.
Margao: Disruption in rail traffic caused due to the breakdown of overhead equipment wire of the Madgaon-Mumbai Konkan Kanya Express in Ratnagiri on Thursday night led to several trains on the Konkan Railway route running late by two to four hours on Friday. The overhead equipment line malfunctioned around 1am on Friday when the train was between Diwankhawati and Vinhere stations in Ratnagiri district. The incident led to several trains stranded mid-journey for several hours, sources said. The route was restored after a five-hour long trouble shooting exercise. However, Konkan Kanya Express, LTT Madgaon Express, CSTM – Mangalore Express, Matsyagandha Express, Jan Shatabdi Express were among the trains running late by several hours on Friday.Following completion of the electrification of the Konkan Railway route, Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd has been shifting running of trains on to electric traction in a phased manner. Margao: The Curchorem Cacora Municipal Council (CCMC), at a special meeting held on Wednesday, decided to do away with outsourcing of door-to-door collection of garbage. Instead, it will hire labourers from a labour contractor and get the task done.CCMC will invite bids for the purpose as the current contract for door-to-door waste collection expires by December, chairperson Jasmine Braganza told reporters. However, the current contractor will be asked to carry on with the task for another couple of months to ensure seamless transition, it was informed. Councillor Balkrishna Hodarkar, who staunchly advocated the change in the mode of door-to-door collection of waste, told TOI that this move was aimed at saving a considerable amount of taxpayers’ money.A few days before the Wednesday meeting, the councillors met and “after a thorough discussion and careful calculation”, inferred that hiring 45 daily wage labourers from the contractor would bring down the estimated cost of the tender to Rs 1.2 crore, Hodarkar said. The council has also resolved to ensure that garbage collection fees will be collected from unauthorised houses which have so far not been assessed for the purpose.
