Explore use of plastic to boost agriculture yield, says Pramod Sawant

PANAJI: Chief minister Pramod Sawant on Wednesday called on the plastic manufacturing industries to invest in Goa and play a major role in increasing agricultural yield. He said that the All India Plastic Manufacturers Association (AIPMA) must work to help farmers increase their income. Bioplastics and compostable plastics are the future for the industry, Sawant said at the two-day Global MSME Convention for the Indian plastics industry. “Plastic is a major industry that provides packaging and moulded items. Agriculture is the sector where plastic can play a major role in improving the productivity yield and the farmer’s income,” he said. “It would be nice if the AIPMA can organise a conference on the use of plastic in agriculture.” Sawant said that the state government provides a conducive climate for the private sector with many schemes and incentives on offer for industries that are interested in investing in Goa. “I assure you that you will receive all the help and support from the government of Goa in ease of doing business in the state,” the chief minister said. Union minister of micro, small and medium enterprises Narayan Rane virtually addressed the conference, where he said that there are approximately 50,000 industries operating in India’s plastics sector. Rane said that these industries contribute Rs 3.5 lakh crore to the country’s economy and also generate employment opportunities for more than 50,000 people. About Rs 35,000 crores worth of plastic is exported from India, he added. Rane said that 60% of the plastic generated in the country gets recycled, a rate higher than that of developed countries.

The horrifying visuals of migrant workers, including their young children walking on roads like cattle, continue to haunt us. Also, while many were laid off, we wonder if anyone actually gave a thought about how sex workers survived with their lanes being empty. The film will bring the tales of how lives were changed ‘irreversibly’ for many.Prateik Babbar and Sai Tamhankar play a migrant worker-couple, who are left jobless during the lockdown. With no means of transport, they are forced to walk back to their hometown, facing more troubles on the way. Shweta Basu Prasad plays a sex worker from Kamathipura and wonders how she will earn her next meal while practicing social distancing. While Ahana Kumra plays a pilot, who for the first time experiences downtime, compelling her to introspect, Prakash Belawadi plays a father, who is stuck in a different city, during a crucial high point in his daughter’s life.India Lockdown is set to premiere at IFFI Goa on Monday. Expressing her excitement about the same, Sai Tamhankar, in a statement shared, “I couldn’t have possibly wished for more. For the film to be premiering on such a revered and respected platform is a huge honour. I am so humbled by the very thought itself.”She also spoke about being the ‘Madhur Bhandarkar heroine’. “At first it seemed like I was dreaming. To be a part of Madhur sir’s film is a distinction in itself for any actress. I learned so much from him. Even after all these years, there were still things I was able to only realise while working on India Lockdown. Goa CM misled laid-off mining workers: GFP president Vijai Sardesai

PANAJI: A day after TOI reported that companies that acquire mining leases have no obligation to recruit retrenched mining workers, Goa Forward Party (GFP) said that chief minister Pramod Sawant had lied to the mining dependent families. The BJP-led government is playing a “cruel joke” on the mining workers and their families, said GFP president Vijai Sardesai. Sardesai appealed to the government to make it mandatory for new lease holders to hire mining workers who lost their jobs. “Is his promise to put up a condition to new lease holders that they must employ retrenched workers a cruel joke played on mining workers and their families?” said Sardesai as he condemned the “U-turn” taken by the government. TOI reported on Wednesday that the director of mines and geology has not made it mandatory for new lease holders to recruit unemployed or retrenched mining workers. The director said that companies that are participating in the auction of mining blocks have been requested to give “preference” to workers who lost their jobs because of the mining ban. The GFP president said that the government’s policy runs contrary to the assurance given by Sawant in the recent monsoon session of the legislative assembly. “BJP (in the assembly elections) painted a fantastic picture of the future and promised the mining dependents and their families that mining would soon be resumed, and that they will be re-employed by the new mining lease holders,” said Sardesai. He said that the induction of the eight Congress MLAs into BJP has made Sawant “arrogant, rash and apathetic”.

PANAJI: CM Pramod Sawant on Wednesday alerted job-seekers that fraudsters are seeking money in exchange for government jobs, and advised Goans not to fall for such schemes. Sawant said that it recently came to light that two to three persons, all educated, paid money to secure jobs in the state government. “People are falling for such scams even today,” the CM said. “People should learn at least now. Victims, thinking they will get a government job, are paying Rs 20 to 30 lakh. In one case, the job was not even advertised, and the person came to me saying he has paid for this job. I told him, ‘you are a fool’. And educated persons are falling for such frauds, I feel bad about it.” He said that much more awareness is required in Goa, as people seem vulnerable to this kind of scams. In his address on national press day, the CM also said that a patrakar bhavan for journalists would be created in a prime area in Panaji, and that it is the need of the hour. “I recently went to Nagpur and learned that they have one of the best press clubs,” he said. “There is a need for a press club within the capital to carry out conferences and recreational activities. The government is planning three-four projects over the next four years at Patto, (where) a patrakar bhavan will be created.” He called on journalists to raise awareness about job-related scams in Goa. The CM said that over the past decade or two, many people have been swindled by fraudsters who promise jobs abroad in exchange for money. Meanwhile, Sawant said that after the recent public consultation on improving the traffic situation in Goa, another will be held to improve cleanliness in the state. “We will be soon prepare a paper to improve the road traffic situation in Goa, and will start its implementation at the earliest. In the same way, we will hold a public consultation on making the Goa cleanest state,” Sawant said.

Vasco: Taxi operators were left disappointed after they failed to get business even as the first international cruise liner MV Viking Mars, with more than 600 passengers onboard, arrived at Mormugao port on Wednesday.With tour operators arranging luxury coaches for their international guests for sightseeing, the taxi operators were left without any business. Only four taxi operators could manage to get customers, one operator said. Mormugao MLA Sankalp Amonkar said he has requested chief minister Pramod Sawant to convene a meeting with tour operators on Friday to see that opportunity is given to local taxi operators to transport passengers of international cruises that halt at the port. tnn

651 passengers arrive in Goa on cruise liner

Vasco: The first international cruise liner of the season ‘MV Viking Mars’ arrived at Mormugao port on Wednesday with 651 passengers and 452 crew on board. Mormugao MLA Sankalp Amonkar greeted the passengers while Usgao-based musical troupe Shiv Sanskriti Sansthan and women from Headland-Sada dressed in traditional outfits welcomed them.Amonkar said the government must declare Mormugao port as a port of call where cruise ships can stay for two to three days.Currently, domestic and international cruises arrive in the morning and leave by evening and passengers get only five to six hours for sightseeing. “To get a feel of Goa, tourists need to stay for a minimum of two to three days and this will be possible only if cruise ships halt of two or more days,” said Amonkar.While tourism suffered during the pandemic, the MLA said that restarting of cruise liners has given stakeholders a ray of hope. “Tourism stakeholders in Mormugoa and other parts of the state will benefit,” he said. Commenting on speculations about the closure of the Goa International Airport at Dabolim after commissioning of the greenfield airport at Mopa, Amonkar said that chief minister Pramod Sawant has assured him that it will remain operational.
