30 students to benefit from Goa Scholars scheme

Panaji: Thirty students have been selected for the year 2021-22 under former chief minister Manohar Parrikar’s dream scheme Goa Scholar, to pursue higher education in prestigious institutes in India and abroad. The scheme funds higher education of the scholars.The female students selected are Sharvi Samir Khawte, Prajakta Gaurishankar Jirage, Tanhai Gurudev Borkar, Lata Pandurang Karmali, Gauri Satish Nayak, Komal Sumant Salkar and Aarti Sharadchandra Gauns.The Goa Scholar scheme is being implemented through the directorate of higher education and its objective is to identify and encourage young meritorious and outstanding scholars from Goa to pursue their postgraduate and doctoral studies at reputed universities and higher education institutions.This time, 149 students had applied for the Manohar Parrikar Goa Scholar Scheme 2018 and the eligible candidates were shortlisted for the final interview by the scrutiny committee. The selection committee was headed by director of National Institute of Technology, Goa, Gopal Mugeraya. The selections include Shubham Milind Phal, Ashwin Anand Bale, Shubham Sham Sangodkar, Sriyash Mahendra Caculo, Rohan Sandeep Burye, Vineet Madhav Naique Dhaimodker, Vishal Rathod, Selwyn Roque Blanche Reis Gomes, Eeshaan Kanhaiya Vernekar, Aneesh Ashesh Keni, Harsh Jaiprakash Hegde, Chinmay Niranjan Kurdekar, Rahul Suhas Desai and Mifron Fernandes.The scholars chosen include students from diverse areas like computational data science, chemical and bio molecular engineering, advanced automotive engineering, power electronics, industrial engineering, mathematics, computer science, management, medicine, microbiology, etc. Other selections under the scheme were Pawan Vinayak Garde, Cipriyano Simoes, Govindraj Shripad Dessai, Suyash Anant Tirodkar, Aditya Dhananjay Phadte, Parimal Pradeep Prabhudesai, Abhijeet Sangam Talaulikar, Akhil Balaji, and Saurabh Shailesh Shenvi Usgaonkar.

Panaji: Fourteen years after a woman was accused of producing a forged SSCE marksheet and related documents before the passport authority in Panaji, a Panaji court has acquitted her for the offences after the prosecution “miserably failed” to prove its case.“The making of the false document is the basic ingredient of the offence of forgery. In the present case, the prosecution has miserably failed to prove the role of the accused in making a false document,” stated chief judicial magistrate, A Court, Panaji, Ram S Prabhu Dessai.The court found that the SSCE marksheet and school leaving certificate were not sent for scientific examination, and added that the investigating officer didn’t carry out any investigation in respect to the paper used for the marksheet, as well as the ink and machinery used to commit the offence.“…there is absolutely no investigation done so far as making of the false document is concerned. Although the investigating officer was aware that custodian of the blank marksheet was the director of education, the investigating officer deemed it fit not to investigate in that direction,” the court stated.The woman had allegedly produced a forged SSCE marksheet, passing certificate of Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education and a school leaving certificate before the passport authority to avail passport facilities through a travel agent.“It appears that the entire investigation is done by the investigating officer under the pre-supposition that the accused has forged the said documents,” the court added.From the evidence of the passport officer, the court found that the investigating officer collected documents from the passport office without conducting a panchanama.Advocate G Teles, representing the accused, submitted that the passport officer along with the travel agent are in connivance in issuing passports and that there is every possibility that the travel agent might have obtained the woman’s signatures on the form and arranged the forged documents without the knowledge of the accused by charging fees.

Traffic cell seeks details of schools’ transport panels

Panaji: The traffic cell of Goa police has instructed the directorate of education to furnish details of children’s transportation committees of all North Goa schools. Deputy superintendent of police (DySP) Siddhant Shirodkar, in a letter, appraised the director of education that as per sub-rule (2) of rule 5 of the Goa Motor Vehicles (Regulations for School Buses) Rules, 2016, every school must constitute a children’s transportation committee to look into matters pertaining to safe transportation of school children, transportation fees, identification of bus stops, etc. “You are requested to kindly furnish the information/details of the children’s transportation committee constituted by all schools of Tiswadi, Bardez, Pernem, Bicholim and Sattari alukas to this office at the earliest for further necessary action into the matter,” Shirodkar said.As per the rules, the committee has to verify the documents of vehicles transporting children, such as registration certificate, certificate of fitness, certificate of insurance, fire extinguisher, first aid kit, etc.Following a suggestion made by the Road safety council, the Education department three months ago, had asked schools to constitute school transportation committee to ensure children's safety.

33 sagar mitras appointed to promote fisheries across Goa

Panaji: The directorate of fisheries has appointed 33 sagar mitras and has placed them across coastal villages of Goa, said director of fisheries Shamila Monteiro. She was speaking at a live interaction on schemes pertaining to animal husbandry and fisheries.Sagar mitras have also been appointed to promote aquaculture schemes in the hinterlands of the state. “The sagar mitras provide fisheries-related training, technical knowhow and even provide help to fill up forms for the schemes,” Monteiro said.Speaking at the online event, minister of fisheries Nilkanth Harlankar said that efforts in cage culture and fish farming will ensure that Goa becomes self-sustainable in fish production. He appealed to Goans to seek assistance from scientists and technical experts in the state to make use of the fish farms or cage culture infrastructure.“There is a lot of scope for mussel farming in Goa especially when there are institutes such as the Goa University, Goa Biodiversity Board, ICAR-CCARI and NIO that are willing to assist fish farmers in breeding mussels. Similarly crab farming can also be done. There are IIT graduates and young enterprising students who are also willing to assist fish farmers,” he said.Harlankar also made his phone number available during the interaction so that people can approach him directly about the schemes.

Man damages car at Porvorim, affects traffic movement

Panaji: A person with a psychiatric disability blocked and damaged a car with a hammer on the Panaji-Mapusa highway stretch at Porvorim on Saturday afternoon, leading to a traffic snarl for almost two hours.The incident occurred at around 11.45am near the O Coqueiro signal. The bike-borne rider blocked the 4-wheeler and started damaging it. Police said the complainant Anthony Dias was proceeding from Candolim to the airport via Porvorim at the time of the incident.“When Dias reached the signal, some unknown person on a motorcycle made him stop his car. Thereafter, he started breaking the windshields, side mirrors and damaged doors, bonnet and roof with the hammer,” Porvorim police said.“Accused has a history of psychiatric disability. He has been detained and sent for medical examination,” police said. The estimated loss caused to the car is around Rs 1 lakh.
