Canacona: Velim MLA Cruz Silva has said that power woes of Velim constituency will soon be resolved as minister Ramkrishna ‘Sudin’ Dhavalikar has assured to install around eight more transformers in the coming three months.“ This is expected to resolve power problems in the constituency. The minister has also assured that all the faulty streetlights will be replaced,” said the legislator. Canacona: Public using the recently repaired Portuguese-era Ardhofond bridge in Canacona are facing health risks with the open extension joints of the bridge. The repairs of the bridge was taken up at an estimated cost of Rs 8 crore around six months ago and its extension joints were opened up and replaced at six places. The jonts were subsequently filled by a single layer of hotmix. “Some joints are as broad as six to eight inches, and light vehicles plying on the bridge can get stuck in these,” a senior citizen said, adding that if the joints are not filled in on priority, They will cause damage to the spinal cords of the users.Public works department’s technical assistant Sagar Shet, who was inspecting the work when it was taken up six months back, said he will bring it to the notice of the higher authority. Shet said that fresh hotmixing work in some areas of Canacona will be taken up in a week’s time, so the joints can be filled in then to ease the inconvenience to the commuters as of now.
Panaji: Tourism is one of the largest revenue generating sectors in Goa and keeping the state’s beaches is important so the growth of this sector continues, said Amruta Fadnavis, wife of ex-Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis. Amruta’s Divyaj Foundation has organised a beach ‘Clean A Thon’ in Goa on November 28 at 8am at Miramar beach to raise awareness about the importance of preserving the environment.The event is being organised as part of the 53rd International Film Festival of India (Iffi) and Union information and broadcasting minister Anurag Singh Thakur, Goa chief minister Pramod Sawant, along with celebrities like Jackie Shroff, Remo D’Souza and Karan Kundra will participate in the clean-up drive.“Goa has such a big tourism industry. We are having the clean-up drive to just reignite an awareness which is already there within you. At Cannes too, there were sessions this time on sustainable development. And a film festival has the eyeballs to raise awareness about such a message,” said Amruta.“Tourism is one of the largest sectors in Goa. So we should see that this paradise remains a paradise forever,” said Fadnavis.

Panaji: The Disabled Helpline Foundation, in a letter to chief minister Pramod Sawant, has sought to make all government and private buildings, hotels, restaurants, cinema halls, malls and tourist centres, especially all the beaches, accessible to persons with disabilities. Under the new Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, the state must also introduce accessibility to historical places, roadways, bus stops, transport corporation buses, special taxis, signboards, translators and interpreters, the foundation’s national vice-president Vikas Sharma said. He said world-class well equipped entertainment centres and guest houses accessible to persons with disabilities can be established for tourists too as the state is very important from the point of view of tourism. The foundation has also highlighted the importance of empowerment of all categories of people including those with disabilities to encourage their rehabilitation and a single window clearance system with a fixed time period for those availing state disability certificate and unique disability card. Sharma has also called for the constitution of a welfare board for empowerment and overall development of persons with disabilities including a national workshop and fair on empowerment and upliftment of persons with disabilities.
