Neena JacobI hope you have been enjoying the insight to Multiple Intelligence and have found how to motivate and make learning fun for your child. In school it was tough planning introductory activities to stimulate all children but with one child it is much easier.Let us take simple learning like learning spellings. How would we teach using different intelligences?Linguistic or Word Smart: These children can be encouraged to make or write sentences using the new word.Log IC-Mathematically Smart: Children can sort words according to length, number of vowels, starting letters or get them to solve crosswords or play scrabble.Spatial-Visual Smart: These children see patterns so outline the letters in a contrast colour and keep it pinned/pasted somewhere where it can be seen.Interpersonal Smart: Here children love interaction so get them to teach you or a younger sibling the spellingsIntrapersonal Smart: They are calmer and more mature and are happy by themselves. So get them to look up the meaning of the word in a Dictionary or Thesaurus or get them to discover how many words they can make using the same letters.Kinesthetic or Movement Smart: This is for children who love movement. So it can be an activity where each letter has a different sign, much like sign language. So words can be pinned up and children have to sign, spell it or act out each letter to be guessed.Nature Smart: They love nature, so maybe you can teach them an animal alphabet and get them to spell using these cards so TIGER-OWL-MONKEY-ASS-TIGER-OWL spells TomatoMusic Smart: They recognise tunes and can sing so just let them chant the spellings, set it to song and rhythm and see how quickly they pick up.Parents need help with teaching children Tables tooLinguistic or Word Smart: These kids can be encouraged to make stories using tables. For example: a story on guessing the number of people who live in a house by counting the pairs of shoes. Outside the Desai’s house we found 8 shoes, let us count how many pairs- one pair that is 2 of daddy’s shoes, one pair that is 2 of mummy’s shoes, one pair of that is 2 of red running shoes, one pair of that is 2 of green running shoes. So it is four pairs or 8 shoes.Log IC-Mathematically Smart: These kids can be made to understand that multiplication is repeated addition and so 4 x3 is the same as 4+4+4Spatial-Visual Smart: These children see patterns. So let them see by making hand prints and learn the tables of five visually seeing how there are five more fingers with each print.Interpersonal Smart: Children along with their friends can be asked how to make a play to teach the tables of say 6. Hint: they can make a story of the grasshoppers party.Intrapersonal Smart: They are calmer so let them understand the tables and figure a way to learn it.Kinesthetic or Movement Smart: These children love movement so here we can get them to make a necklace for mama using say 3 beads of one colour at a time.Nature Smart: They love nature so let them relate tables to petals on a flower or legs of an octopus.Music Smart: These kids will instinctively get a rhythm to chant the tables and remember. But don’t encourage memorising it, let it come with understanding.There are so many ways to teach your child and I was happy when I saw endless ways to stimulate and make learning fun for my child. As an adult now I am learning Portuguese and I know I love sounds and pictures so I try to make things easier by listening repeatedly to stories and say words aloud. I also use visual cues to help me remember words.Giving your child tools to learn in the early years and introducing recognising skills helps to reinforce concepts. In primary school basic concepts are taught and if the ground work is done well the rest will fall into place. Make learning joyful and let your child apply what is learnt to reinforce learning. Scrabble games and checking simple bills will help a child to apply concepts. Even something as simple as keeping track of the change you bring home every day can go a long way, even though with GooglePay and online transactions we rarely have change in the wallet.(The writer is a volunteer in local schools and a trustee with Sethu)
