State may receive rainfall at isolated places this week

Panaji: A cyclonic circulation is likely to form over eastcentral Bay of Bengal around September 7. Under its influence a low-pressure area is likely to form over westcentral Bay of Bengal during subsequent 48 hours, bringing rainfall to Goa.The India meteorological department (IMD) has attributed the reasons to formation of a north-south trough to Comorin area at lower tropospheric levels, and a cyclonic circulation over the Comorin area and adjoining Maldives in lower tropospheric levels.The IMD has forecast thunderstorm accompanied with lightning and winds gusting to 40kmph at isolated places over Goa on September 5 to 7. Heavy rainfall is very likely at isolated places on September 8 and 9.The southwest monsoon has so far been weak over Goa.On Monday, parts of Sattari, Dharbandora, Sanguem and Quepem, experienced thundershowers.

Panaji: Old Goa police on Monday arrested Satish Yallappa Hiranwale, 42, from Sangolda in a hit-and-run case that saw one fatality. Old Goa PI Satish Padwalkar said that the accused, who was driving a four-wheeler in an inebriated condition, had hit a two-wheeler at the Kadamba bypass, causing serious injuries to the rider and the pillion rider.Pillion rider Kaushal Bandodkar, 25, a resident of Chimbel, succumbed to his injuries while undergoing medical treatment at Goa Medical College. Padwalkar said that the vehicle involved in the accident was traced late Sunday night at Sangolda, and Hiranwale, who was not traceable, was arrested from a forest area in Guirim-Sangolda.After hitting the two-wheeler, the accused fled without administering any medical aid to the victims and without informing police.

PANAJI: BJP South Goa in-charge and Union minister of state for skill development and entrepreneurship, electronics and IT, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, will hold a brainstorm meeting with BJP functionaries, ministers and MLAs at Margao to chalk out a plan to win the South Goa Lok Sabha parliamentary seat. Chandrasekhar will arrive in Goa on Tuesday on a two-day visit as part of the Lok Sabha Pravas programme. Panaji: Tourism is one of the largest revenue generating sectors in Goa and keeping the state’s beaches is important so the growth of this sector continues, said Amruta Fadnavis, wife of ex-Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis. Amruta’s Divyaj Foundation has organised a beach ‘Clean A Thon’ in Goa on November 28 at 8am at Miramar beach to raise awareness about the importance of preserving the environment.The event is being organised as part of the 53rd International Film Festival of India (Iffi) and Union information and broadcasting minister Anurag Singh Thakur, Goa chief minister Pramod Sawant, along with celebrities like Jackie Shroff, Remo D’Souza and Karan Kundra will participate in the clean-up drive.“Goa has such a big tourism industry. We are having the clean-up drive to just reignite an awareness which is already there within you. At Cannes too, there were sessions this time on sustainable development. And a film festival has the eyeballs to raise awareness about such a message,” said Amruta.“Tourism is one of the largest sectors in Goa. So we should see that this paradise remains a paradise forever,” said Fadnavis.

Panaji: The 53rd International Film Festival of India (Iffi) will close on Monday evening in the presence of Hindi film actor Akshay Kumar. Telugu mega-star Chiranjeevi will be present at the event to receive the Indian Film Personality of the Year award for 2022. The winners of the Golden Peacock for the best film and Silver Peacock for best director and best male and female actors will be announced, along with the winner of the ICFT Gandhi Medal.Polish film Krzysztof Zanussi’s Perfect Number is the closing film.“The red carpet for the closing film will begin around 2pm, followed by the film screening. The red carpet for the closing ceremony will start at 4pm and the closing event will begin at 4.45pm. Actor Akshay Kumar has confirmed his presence,” said festival director Ravinder Bhakkar.Goa governor P S Sreedharan Pillai, Union minister for information and broadcasting (I&B) Anurag Singh Thakur, minister for state for I&B, L Murugan, and Goa chief minister Pramod Sawant will also be present. Court acquits woman in 14-yr-old case of SSC marksheet forgery

Panaji: Fourteen years after a woman was accused of producing a forged SSCE marksheet and related documents before the passport authority in Panaji, a Panaji court has acquitted her for the offences after the prosecution “miserably failed” to prove its case.“The making of the false document is the basic ingredient of the offence of forgery. In the present case, the prosecution has miserably failed to prove the role of the accused in making a false document,” stated chief judicial magistrate, A Court, Panaji, Ram S Prabhu Dessai.The court found that the SSCE marksheet and school leaving certificate were not sent for scientific examination, and added that the investigating officer didn’t carry out any investigation in respect to the paper used for the marksheet, as well as the ink and machinery used to commit the offence.“…there is absolutely no investigation done so far as making of the false document is concerned. Although the investigating officer was aware that custodian of the blank marksheet was the director of education, the investigating officer deemed it fit not to investigate in that direction,” the court stated.The woman had allegedly produced a forged SSCE marksheet, passing certificate of Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education and a school leaving certificate before the passport authority to avail passport facilities through a travel agent.“It appears that the entire investigation is done by the investigating officer under the pre-supposition that the accused has forged the said documents,” the court added.From the evidence of the passport officer, the court found that the investigating officer collected documents from the passport office without conducting a panchanama.Advocate G Teles, representing the accused, submitted that the passport officer along with the travel agent are in connivance in issuing passports and that there is every possibility that the travel agent might have obtained the woman’s signatures on the form and arranged the forged documents without the knowledge of the accused by charging fees.
