Saffron sweeps Sanguem, mixed bag in Quepem

Margao: In politically volatile Quepem constituency, while MLA Altone D’Costa claimed to have made a “clean sweep” in three out of the seven panchayats, ex-MLA Chandrakant Kavlekar maintained his sway over the rest. In Sanguem, MLA Subhash Phal Dessai succeeded in bringing all seven panchayats under his belt, while in Sanvordem constituency, MLA Ganesh Gaonkar, too, established his dominion over the grassroot-bodies. D’Costa addressed reporters along with the newly elected representatives of Morpirla, Balli-Adnem, and Naqueri-Betul panchayats. In Morpirla, Ashwini Gaonkar was elected sarpanch and Prakash Velip deputy. Govind Dessai was elected sarpanch of Balli and Bindiya Gaonkar deputy.In Naqueri-Betul, Pritam Deulcar was elected sarpanch and Kishor Naik deputy sarpanch. From the Kavlekar camp, Ajay Pagi and Kurpesh Velip were elected sarpanch and deputy sarpanch of Khola panchayat, Arjun Velip and Shivanya Velip got elected to the top two posts of Barcem panchayat. In Fatorpa, Mahesh Faldessai and Medini Naik were elected sarpanch and deputy sarpanch unopposed, while Bhupendra Gaunso Dessai and Shilipa Gajanand Prabhudessai were elected sarpanch and deputy sarpanch of Avedem-Cottambi panchayat.In all the seven panchayats in Sanguem, the candidates got elected unopposed.In Sanvordem panchayat, with Chinmaya Naik getting elected unopposed as sarpanch and Nitesh Bhandari as deputy sarpanch, BJP succeeded in wresting the panchayat under its control.

The President of KBM Anwesha Singbal said that through its multiple events in the state, we have realised that a huge demand for Konkani material exists. The sales of this material and music CDs have shown that people are eagerly seeking material in Konkani for children that is well produced and attractively priced. In the absence of this, they reach for material in English or other languages and do not help children to grow in Konkani."

Two nabbed for theft at Colva

Colva: Colva police have arrested two residents of Housing Board, Gogol, for their alleged involvement in stealing items from a car.Wasim Sayed and Yasim Shaikh, both in their mid-thirties, broke open a car and decamped with a laptop and mobile chargers, all worth around Rs 80,000.Khaushid Shaikh from Quepem had lodged a complaint of theft against unidentified persons. After checking the CCTV footage from the vicinity, the police managed to identify the accused and nabbed them.Sources said the stolen property is yet to be recovered as one of the accused developed hypertension and had to be admitted to a hospital.

Ponda: Sanjivani sugar factory at Dayanandnagar Tisk in Dharbandora has begun paying the balance 20% compensation amount to its sugarcane farmers. The factory administration said that till Thursday, 133 farmers had been paid a total amount of Rs 54.2 lakh.Over 700 cane farmers are registered with Sanjivani. Of the 133 farmers, 30 are from Quepem, 27 from Sattari, 21 from Sanguem, 15 from Pernem and 39 from Canacona, factory administrator Satej Kamat told TOI.The first instalment of this year’s compensation was distributed in May. The government had sanctioned Rs 7.5 crore for the payment. Kamat said the government has sanctioned a further Rs 3.6 crore to pay the remaining instalment of the compensation. Cane farmers registered under the factory have been getting the compensation amount from the state government under the special assistance scheme to sugarcane cultivators, in lieu of the factory’s closure in 2019. While shutting down the factory, the government had assured farmers that they would receive compensation for five consecutive years, starting from 2020-21 at a rate of Rs 3,000 per metric tonne (MT) of canes for the first year. In the second year they will get Rs 2,800 per MT, Rs 2,600 for the third year, Rs 2,400 for the fourth year and a final Rs 2,200 for the fifth year.

Margao: As a part of its restructuring process, state Congress president Amit Patkar on Tuesday appointed block presidents to its 21 block committees.The new block presidents are Narayan Redkar for Mandrem, Manoj Naik for Bicholim, Shashank Narvekar for Mapusa, Parvati Nagvekar for Siolim, Atul Naik for Saligao, Ashwin De Souza for Aldona, Dnyaneshwar Govekar for Taleigao, Manoj Palkar for St Andre, Mangaldas Naik for Sankhali, Harshad Bhonsle for Priol, William Aguiar for Ponda, Dnyaneshwar Borkar for Marcaim, Vasant Naik for Dabolim, Peter D’Souza for Cortalim, Milagres Fernandes for Curtorim, Anwar Sayyed for Fatorda, Assiz Noronha for Cuncolim, Fransisco Rodrigues for Velim, Avadoot Amonkar for Quepem, Parag Sabnis for Curchorem and Jayesh Patil for Sanvordem, a per a press release. Dam water will be released by November 14 for agriculture: WRD minister

PANAJI: Water from dams will be released for agriculture activities from November 14 onwards and there will be no shortage of drinking water, said minister for water resources Subhash Shirodkar, on Thursday. He added that two dams will be taken up in Dharbandora and work on them will be started soon. Shirodkar said that water from six dams was usually released by November-end or in December, but when he visited Sanguem and Quepem recently, farmers requested him to release water on time to take up agriculture activities. Stating that the dams have sufficient raw water, Shirodkar said that seven talukas in Goa depend on agriculture and around 8,000 farmers are involved in farming activities. "Post-Covid, Goan youth have taken up agriculture and horticulture," he said. "In February and March, we have to judiciously use water for drinking as the Maharashtra government is likely to take up repair work of the Tillari canal to resolve the breach issue," the WRD minister said, adding that the WRD will store Tillari dam water to avoid shortage to Porvorim.
