‘Register protest to land norms changes on Mon’

Margao: A group of protestors under the banner Rainbow Warriors on Wednesday called upon people to join in a protest outside the chief town planner’s office on Monday at 10.30am to register their rejection of the amendments to the Goa Land Development and Building Construction (amendment) Regulations, 2022.Abhijit Prabhudessai told reporters that the protest intends to “warn the government to respect our democracy and work for the future generations, instead of the profits of a few.”“These amendments will open the gates for widespread destruction of the remaining green areas of Goa at the hands of greedy land speculators and will displace Goans on an unprecedented scale,” Prabhudessai said. Explaining the reasons for their objections, he said, “Agricultural and eco-sensitive zones in RP 2021 were protected until now, but this amendment proposes massive constructions with lakhs of square meters of built-up area within lands demarcated under RP 2021 as A1 and A2 zones, which include forests, mangroves, khazans, paddy fields, nallahs/ponds, sand dunes, orchards, etc, under the garb of golf courses, film cities, film studios, etc. The amendments proposed include many other dilutions to help builders and land speculators, such as reducing width of road required, allowing higher FARs for various constructions and removing the need to keep spaces for education and other public utilities for development of areas over five hectare.”
