One dies after truck overturns at Canacona

Canacona: A truck carrying bamboo fell on its side near Bhumipurush temple at Gulem, Canacona, on Tuesday killing one Porama Hutia, 35, who got trapped under the bamboo.Hutia, a native of Assam and a resident of Cabo-de-Rama, Canacona, was among eight labourers in the truck. Another labourer Manom Gam, 18, also a native of Assam, suffered a fracture to his leg . Police said Hutia was taken out from under the bamboos by police and fire services personnel, and shifted to the Canacona CHC where he was declared brought dead by the doctors. His body was shifted to the South Goa district hospital, Margao, for an autopsy.Police said that the truck from Ratnagiri, Maharashtra, was heading to Cabo-de-Rama. “They were to take the bypass route to Agonda road but took a longer route via Gulem. While negotiating a sharp turn, just metres before the Bhumipurush temple, Praveen Passte, 24, the driver, lost control over the vehicle and the truck fell on its side,” police said.

Vasco: The department of legal metrology during a raid at Housing Board Colony, Zuarinagar, Vasco of BPCL domestic LPG cylinders, found 13 of the domestic LPG cylinders to be underweight.On Monday, people residing in Lamani Colony, Zuarinagar raised a protest after finding some cylinders brought for distribution were short in weight.Both the delivery person and driver of the distribution vehicle abandoned the truck and fled from the site after consumers confronted the duo.Following the uproar, assistant controller, legal metrology, South Zone-I Margao, Nitin Purushan along with his team rushed to the site and conducted a raid. Purushan said that necessary action will be initiated against the gas agency as per provisions of the legal metrology rules and acts. The department has advised consumers to check the weight of a cylinder before buying it and check the verification certificate issued by the department, and also urged citizens to lodge complaints on the designated number.

Canacona: Public using the recently repaired Portuguese-era Ardhofond bridge in Canacona are facing health risks with the open extension joints of the bridge. The repairs of the bridge was taken up at an estimated cost of Rs 8 crore around six months ago and its extension joints were opened up and replaced at six places. The jonts were subsequently filled by a single layer of hotmix. “Some joints are as broad as six to eight inches, and light vehicles plying on the bridge can get stuck in these,” a senior citizen said, adding that if the joints are not filled in on priority, They will cause damage to the spinal cords of the users.Public works department’s technical assistant Sagar Shet, who was inspecting the work when it was taken up six months back, said he will bring it to the notice of the higher authority. Shet said that fresh hotmixing work in some areas of Canacona will be taken up in a week’s time, so the joints can be filled in then to ease the inconvenience to the commuters as of now.

Canacona: If the construction work of the Rs 11 crore 3-storey administrative-cum-commercial building of the Canacona Municipal Council (CMC) is not carried out as per the specifications and designs, then it will not be tolerated said assembly speaker and Canacona MLA Ramesh Tawadkar, in a veiled warning to the contractor of the Goa State Urban Development Agency.Councillors have been complaining of the delays in works during the monthly council meetings and also the faulty designs, he said.Recently, the matter was brought to the notice of the Canacona MLA by CMC chairperson Ramakant Naik Gaunkar and a joint inspection was also held .CMC complained of non-availability of the construction plan at the work site besides faulty execution of the work. We waited for it to happen for more than six months. Only in April could the work start.
