Not in the habit of grabbing jobs for my constituents: CM

Panaji: Chief minister Pramod Sawant said on Wednesday that he is “not in the habit” of grabbing jobs for his constituency alone, and said that 100% of the jobs at Mopa International Airport have gone to people from that part of Pernem taluka. Sawant was responding to comments about rumours of Mopa airport jobs having gone to residents of Sanquelim. “It is wrong. Till date, more than 500 youth have been permanently employed, 100% of them are from Pernem. I have verified it. Around 200 firemen stationed there are also all Pednekars. We will be handing over their appointment letters one of these days,” Sawant said. The CM said that the Ayush hospital coming up in Pernem is expected to be functional by July, while the Mopa airport project will be ready for use by August 15. The National Institute for Watersports will be inaugurated by the end of the year, Sawant said. “Goa has benefited to the tune of Rs 74.7 crore under the national scheme to upgrade primary health centres,” he said on completion of eight years of BJP running the Union government. “The Ayushman Bharat insurance scheme has benefitted over 21,000 persons and people have got benefits to the tune of Rs 33 crore. Under the PM housing scheme, people in Goa have received benefits of up to Rs 67 crore in urban areas and Rs 23 crore in rural areas.” He also said that under the PM Kisan Nidhi Scheme, 11,800 farmers in Goa have received Rs 6,000 directly in their account. Also, 147 farmers from Goa have registered so far for the farmer pension, the CM said. State BJP president Sadanand Shet Tanavade said that from June 4 to 15, awareness about state and central government schemes will be created in Goa. “Garib Kalyan Melava will be held in each constituency. The CM, Union minister Shripad Naik, senior functionary Vinay Tendulkar and MLAs will participate in the melavas,” he said.

Panaji: Congress’ Goa desk in-charge Dinesh Gundu Rao has slammed the Goa government for deciding not to hold the panchayat polls as per schedule and said that the trend of not conducting elections of civic bodies is being seen across the country. On Tuesday, chief minister Pramod Sawant had declared that he would announce the postponement panchayat elections before their term ends. “Across the country, BJP has been trying to avoid conducting civic body polls. In Karnataka, panchayat elections have not been held for two years after the term ended. BJP does not believe in decentralising power and they want to do what suits them irrespective of the Constitutional requirement,” Rao said. He said the Congress’ stand has been clear that the panchayat elections have to be held on time when it was pointed out that some Congress MLAs, including opposition leader Michael Lobo, wanted the panchayat elections to be deferred. “I will have to clarify with Lobo about what he said at that point of time. Some MLAs may have given their individual opinions, but the party stand is clear. The government should not delay elections,” Rao said. He refuted the statement of BJP Goa desk incharge C T Ravi that some Congress MLAs were in touch with them. “I don’t see anything playing out like that though rumours are being spread from time to time. Our MLAs are together and participated in today’s meeting though one or two did not attend due to personal reasons, but they will be here tomorrow(Thursday),” Rao said responding to a questionat the press conference on Wednesday. Congress’ two-day meet — a Sanklap shibir — to strategise and revamp the party is underway. Rao also refuted that Margao MLA Digambar Kamat was not happy with the party and absented himself from Congress functions. “He is our senior leader. He has attended several scheduled programmes of the party. He put his heart and soul in the assembly elections, and led the campaign. There is a disappointment for not getting blessed by people despite the hard work, but I don’t see anything more than that,” Rao said.

Staff ReporterPanajiAll India Congress Committee (AICC) secretary in-charge of Goa Dinesh Gundu Rao has accused the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of using the issue of reservation of seats for Other Backward Classes as an “excuse” to delay the panchayat polls.“The BJP governments in different states are not conducting elections to local bodies; in Karnataka too they have not conducted the polls. BJP don’t believe in decentralization of powers and do whatever suits them,” Rao said addressing a press conference in Panaji along with GPCC president Amit Patkar on Wednesday.“In Goa, for the government, it is a very convenient thing right now…elections and backward classes (reservation) issue, both of them are being used not to conduct the elections,” he added. The AICC in-charge urged the government not to resort to “delay tactics”.He said that Congress’ stand is that panchayat elections in Goa should not be postponed and should be held on time. When pointed out that the CLP leader Michael Lobo himself has demanded postponement of panchayat polls so as to adopt a triple test for reservation of seats for OBCs, Rao said, “Sometimes they may have individual opinion; ultimately what the party says is the final stand.”“We are demanding that elections should be held on time and we are also urging the government not to deny the backward classes their quota,” he added.Reacting to the recent statement of BJP Goa in-charge C. T. Ravi, who had said that at least five opposition MLAs are keen to join the saffron party, Rao said that all Congress MLAs are intact and expressed confidence that nobody will leave the party.Meanwhile, Rao informed that national Congress leadership will soon constitute a political affairs committee which will work in close co-ordination with the GPCC for the vertical growth of the party’s organisation in the state.GPCC president Amit Patkar said that currently Udaipur-like Chintan shivir in Panaji is going on and it will be soon held at the district level. He informed that every party worker and leaders are participating in the event which is aimed at discussing the party’s affairs and ultimately working for success in futureelections.
