Min: SC order on reservation likely to delay pyat polls

Panaji: Panchayats minister Mauvin Godinho on Thursday said that panchayat elections may be delayed as the Supreme Court has said that either the OBC reservations be carried out as per the data obtained from the OBC commission or else there should be no reservation in the category for the poll. Godinho said that the term of the present panchayats ends on June 19. He said that the state government has handed over the delimitation of wards and reservation of wards to the State Election Commission . “With reservation of wards coming in, there are more complaints. What has impacted the finalisation of reservation of wards is the Supreme Court directive stating that the state OBC commission has to have a say in formulating the number of OBC candidates on the basis of the actual OBC population in those particular wards and areas,” he said. Godinho said that if such an exercise is not conducted, the election should be conducted considering the ward as a general ward. “I have to place all these matters before the CM and cabinet to take a decision on the issue. Looking at this particular scenario, naturally a little more time will be needed. We will perhaps have to realign the timing of the election to meet what the SC has mandated in its order,” the panchayats minister said. “If we go ahead with the reservation and somebody approaches the court and says that this has not been done as per the wishes of the OBC commission or the procedure laid down by the SC, we could be found wanting.”
