Vasco: Hundreds of people residing in the vicinity of the Mormugao Solid Waste Treatment Plant (MSWTP) at Headland-Sada had to suffer pollution from the thick smoke after 1,000 tonne of reused derived fuel (RDF) stacked at the plant was set ablaze by miscreants on Wednesday.Patients and staff at the nearest hospital run by the Mormugao Port Authority (MPA) also faced the brunt of the fire. The Vasco and MPA fire services tried to put out the fire till late Wednesday night, but in vain. The exercise continued on Thursday, with nearly 50 water tankers being used but the authorities failed to bring relief to the people. The fire may take another 15 days to be brought under control, due to which municipal authorities have asked for help from the state government. This is not the first such incident and residents in the vicinity have suffered in the past as well. Ward councillor Shami Salkar has proposed to shift the collection of day-to-day garbage to the proposed Curchorem plant or the Curca plant. The MMC, in its investigation, revealed that the fire was reported at 8.30pm on Wednesday when the watchman deployed at the plant went home after discharging his duties. Municipal chief officer Jayant Tari filed a complaint with the Mormugao police against unknown persons for setting the garbage plant on fire.An emergency meeting was convened of all stakeholders on Thursday by Mormugao MLA Sankalp Amonkar at the office of the deputy collector and sub-divisional magistrate on Thursday evening to take immediate steps to douse the fire. Amonkar urged people not to politicise the issue. “My first priority is to bring the fire under control,” he said.
