Goa: In Canacona, pre-primary school attendance hit by HFM disease

CANACONA: Pre-primary schools in the hinterlands of the Canacona have been seeing a drop in attendance following cases of hand, foot and mouth (HFM) disease. Sources said that children across age groups have contracted the disease, from toddlers right up to those studying in Class VII. The school sends the children home after they start showing symptoms, the source said. Another source in the Integrated Child Development Services said that no cases have been reported from anganwadis and balwadis and that it was school going children who have been most affected. Doctors practicing in the taluka told TOI that it is advisable for the parents to ensure that their child gets enough rest if affected by the disease. Doctors also said that it was essential that hygiene is maintained and the child is well hydrated.

CANACONA: As part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, a mega Tiranga Mahotsav will be held at Canacona on Saturday. Speaker Ramesh Tawadkar said that celebrations have been planned at the three main state borders of Patradevi, Castlerock and Polem. “The responsibility for the Polem celebration is with Canconcars”, Tawadkar said. “It is equally important that ‘desh bhakti’ is generated amongst all the citizens of our country and that citizens become responsible,” he said, adding that Canacona too, will participate in the nationwide patriotic celebration with fervour. According to organisers, more than 2,000 college and school students will participate in the various programs, some of which are scheduled to be held simultaneously from Polem to Palolem. There are about eight to 10 freedom fighters from the taluka who are still alive. All may not participate in the celebrations, organisers said, as some are living elsewhere in the country and the movement of some others has been limited due to age. As part of the celebration, over 100 students will visit places at Angadi-Majali in the neighbouring Karwar district of Karnataka where once the Azad Gomantak Dal and Goa National Congress fought for freedom. Principal of the Shree Mallikarjun College and program in-charge, Manoj Kamat, said that Tawadkar will welcome the torch-bearing contingent that will light a torch at Polem following which school students will sing patriotic songs and a march past will be held. There will also be a street play and Run for Tiranga competition. The Tiranga Mahotsav is being jointly celebrated by the directorate of higher education in association with the Shree Mallikarjun College and the deputy collector (Canacona) supported by the directorate of education and Taluka Level Steering Committee (TLSC).

Panaji: After a prolonged weak spell of 20 days, Goa experienced widespread precipitation over the past couple of days. CANACONA: Since June, Canacona taluka has been seeing an increasing number of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) cases among school children. Though the infection is self-limiting and rarely turns severe, doctors said it is highly contagious. Health officer Canacona community health centre Dr Sneha Amonkar said that the disease, usually caused by the coxsackievirus, is common among children. “Fever and painful rashes on hands, feet and buttocks are some symptoms. It is very contagious and an infected child may pass it to other children in school, even the entire family,” she said. Amonkar said that though the infection is self-limiting and mostly mild, infected children should not be sent to school for at least a week to prevent transmission. “Because of the rashes in the oral cavity and throat, some children might find swallowing painful and refuse food. They might need hospital care to prevent dehydration,” she added. People normally try to treat it at home following utmost care and hygiene. The virus has an incubation period of three to six weeks. “Currently we are seeing an increasing number of children with the infection in schools and also among children in surrounding areas who are too young to go to school. But parents need not panic and should consult doctors if symptoms persist,” a consultant paediatrician practicing in the taluka said. HFMD, caused by coxsackieviruses, usually causes fever, malaise, skin rash, sore throat, and small blisters that ulcerate. The most frequent locations for the blisters/ulcers are on the palms of the hand, soles of the feet, and in the mouth, added the paediatrician. HFMD usually resolves in about 10 days with no scarring, but the person may shed coxsackievirus for several weeks. “If the fever and irritability persist, consult doctors without delay,” a health inspector said.

Canacona: Electricity department staffers need to put in more efforts to provide quality services to consumers, said chief electrical engineer Stephen Fernandes. He addressing the ‘Ujjwal Bharat-Ujjwal Bhavishya’ campaign at Canacona recently. “Good service must be uninterrupted, reliable, quality and economic. However, we are lacking in our service. If we want the Ujjwal Bharat-Ujjwal Bhavishya campaign to succeed, we should work hard to realise that target. And being a native of Canacona, we must strive to improve services in the taluka,” he said.Fernandes also said that in view of the present load being consumed by industrial and domestic users, additional power will be needed for e-vehicles.Goa has come a long way in power supply, from a meagre 5 MW during pre-liberation to 650 MW today, he said. “There was a lone power sub-station at Ponda that catered to the six towns of Ponda, Panaji, Mapusa, Vasco, Margao and Curchorem,” he said. He stated that the load was increased to 14 MW in 1970, and subsequently to 250 MW in 2000, 450 MW in 2010 and 650 MW in 2020. The first grid supply was achieved in 1967 with 110 Supa transmission lines, which are however not used today, whereas the second line was set up in 1972.“Presently, we have six lines drawn from other states and another two are in progress. With an increasing demand for more load and with a vision for the next 25-100 years, we need more power, and hence more lines or upgradation,” he added.
