From December, one in five matches fixed in Goa Pro League

Panaji: International betting monitoring agencies have red-flagged 12 matches in the Goa Pro League for anomalous betting, including one game that was played on Tuesday. Since December when the first red flag was raised, agencies have been busy tracking suspicious betting patterns with 12 of the 68 games red-flagged and two others classified as Amber II. Red-flagged games are those that have “something genuinely concerning about the betting”, while Amber II are those with enough evidence to suggest that the betting and/or match action was possibly abnormal from an integrity perspective. London-based Sportradar, who has a partnership with the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) in the field of integrity, specifically addressing match-fixing, has informed the All India Football Federation (AIFF) of three games played in December that threw up alarming results. For all three games played between December 13 and December 29 last year, Sportradar said in its report, “there is clear and overwhelming evidence that the course or result of this match was unduly influenced with a view to gain corrupt betting profits.” These games include Dempo SC vs Calangute Association (4-0), YC Manora vs Dempo (0-4) and Velsao SCC vs Sporting Clube de Goa (0-5). For these games, evidence indicated that bettors held prior knowledge of Calangute, Manora and Velsao all losing the first half and eventually the game. Significantly, Genius Sports, integrity partners of the Goa Football Association (GFA) who organise the league, also red-flagged the three games, besides another clash between FC Goa and Manora which the former won 2-0 on December 30. As exclusively reported by TOI on Thursday, Genius Sports raised the red flag for six games played between March 15 and March 24, 2022. The latest report from the UK-headquartered company examined 21 games this month, two of which were asked to be investigated for possible match-fixing. The games include Vasco’s 0-4 loss against Salgaocar on April 21 and Velsao’s 1-3 loss against Manora on April 26. “The sustained and successful wagering in opposition of Vasco could not be explained due to its timing and volume, as well as the behaviour of the major Asian bookmakers trading the game. “This fixture triggered an alert due to considerable pre-match and live betting support for Salgaocar, firstly to win and then to extend their lead in-play. There was also significant volume of betting support for at least three goals to be scored before kick-off, and then for at least four goals at 0-1. As the match ended 0-4 (in favour of Salgaocar), this wagering was successful and highly concerning from an integrity standpoint,” Genius said in its confidential report. Another match played on Tuesday between Velsao and Manora – both featuring in a significant number of ‘Red’ reported matches – saw “highly-anomalous and concerning betting.” All attempts in match-fixing are towards a team losing with players paid to underperform. GFA president Churchill Alemao said rise in red-flagged matches was highly concerning for Goan football. “Goa is known the world over for its football. It was (former chief minister) Manohar Parrikar who made football the state sport (in 2012), something that no other state has done. I feel the best solution is to ask the police to investigate,” said Alemao. The GFA executive committee is meeting early next week to give the president the green signal to submit the confidential reports and match footage, wherever available, to Goa police. RED-FLAGGED MATCHES Dec 13: Dempo vs Calangute, 4-0 Dec 16: Manora vs Dempo, 0-4 Dec 29: Velsao vs Sporting, 0-5 Dec 30: FC Goa vs Manora, 2-0 March 15: Guardian Angel vs Dempo, 0-4 March 15: Sesa FA vs Velsao 5-1 March 18: YC Manora vs Velsao, 0-3 March 21: Velsao vs Calangute, 1-5 March 21: Manora vs Sporting Clube 0-5 March 24: Manora vs Salgaocar, 1-4 April 21: Vasco vs Salgaocar, 0-4 April 26: Velsao vs Manora, 1-3

NGPDA files police complaint against them over Parra propertyPanaji/Mapusa: The North Goa Planning and Development Authority (NGPDA) on Monday filed a complaint with the Mapusa police against Opposition leader Michael Lobo and his MLA wife Delilah Lobo over the alleged land filling at Parra in Bardez taluka. However, Town and Country Planning Minister Vishwajit Rane maintained that “in violation of the Section 17A and 17B of TCP Act, 1974, an FIR has been filed against Michael Lobo and his wife Delilah Lobo for land filling and tree-cutting at Parra”.The NGPDA asked the police to register an FIR against the Opposition leader and Delilah Lobo under Section 17-B of the Town and Country Planning Act, 1974 for illegally filling mud in a low-lying paddy field bearing survey number 10/8, 9, 10 at Parra.Michael Lobo is Congress’ Calangute MLA, while his wife represents Siolim constituency forthe Congress. Michael Lobo refuted the charges made in the letter claiming that the property shown in the photographs posted on the social media by the TCP Minister is not owned by them, and that Rane is trying to defame them.On March 17, 2022, the NGPDA issued a show-cause notice to the Lobo couple in this matter.Assistant engineer of the NGPDA Vikram Tengse in his letter to police inspector of Mapusa police station stated that the authority was in receipt of a letter on November 11, 2020 from deputy town planner of town and country planning department, Mapusa from Rama Matondkar, which stated that access to his property has been blocked by the Lobos.“Accordingly the site was inspected on September 7, 2021 and noticed that property bearing survey number 10/8 and 10/10 of Parra village is filled up to adjoining road level and mud filling is done of 4.00 mts width approximately in survey number 10/9 of Parra village without taking permission under section 17A of TCP act, 1974,” it stated. The letter further said that Matondkar had filed a writ petition before High Court against the said land filling upon which the court directed to the authority on March 2, 2022 to take action in terms of the law based on the prima facie material in the form of inspection report of a flying squad.“In view of the above, you are kindly requested to file (an) FIR against Michael Lobo and Delilah Lobo, residents of Bhatti Vaddo, Parra Bardez for filling mud in (a) low-lying paddy field bearing survey number 108, 9, and 10 of Parra village under Section 17B of TCP Act, 1974,” said the letter addressed to the police inspector.Reacting to the Michael Lobo’s statement, Rane tweeted, “Why is the term land mafia offensive to Lobo?”“I would like to draw the attention of the leader of Opposition to the fact – there are one PIL, 10 civil appeals, 3 PILs and 60 civil appeals in the court, of which 30 miscellaneous appeals have been dismissed,” Rane maintained. He also alleged that mangroves and saltpans have been converted, and a petition has been filed in this regard. The Opposition leader should not look upon the development as a political witch hunt, but rather as an act of cleansing of all illegalities committed in Calangute and Candolim, the TCP Minister said.“Experts will scrutinise all the matters and everything will be revealed in the next 60 days,” he added.Taking still yet another dig at the Lobos, Rane in his tweet asked: why would so many people petition the court if everything was in line? Isn’t it responsible governance to take cognisance and pause on sub judice matters? There is a similar case of 90,000 sq. mt. of land in survey number 92 of Marra village purchased by an influential person, Rane claimed.“The area is under natural cover and illegally converted as an ‘outline development plan’ for settlement. We will submit this to the committee for review. Such transgressions will not be tolerated,” he said.Addressing at a press conference at Parra, the Opposition leader said that he will meet the Chief Minister Pramod Sawant over the issue and will write a letter to him.He said the TCP Minister posted on social media wrong photographs over the issue of the alleged land filling and hill-cutting.“…My property is being developed as a farm after taking all permission from all authorities. We want to grow vegetables which will be used for our restaurant and hotels and not undertake any construction. It looks like we are being targeted for being in Opposition,” the Calangute MLA stated.“He (Rane) is trying to target me at the behest of someone. He wants to show somebody that he is a capable minister to handle the Opposition. This is political revenge. Rane wants to become holier than cow,” Opposition leader maintained.AICC incharge of Goa desk Dinesh Gundu Rao said the filing of the complaint against Michael Lobo and Delilah Lobo is an act of vindictive politics by the TCP Minister.“You have got an opportunity to govern Goa again for 5 more years; use that period judiciously; don’t use it to settle scores,” Rao tweeted.

What’s common between Union Club of Quitula, Quitula Sports Club and Quitula Sports and Cultural Club? It’s the same club, oozing rich sporting and cultural history. The club kickstarted its golden jubilee celebrations on Saturday with dine and dance. As members, and villagers, gathered at the Club House to celebrate the occasion, it was time to reflect on a rich past. “The club is functioning very well. Our main aim is to protect the youth of Aldona from going astray,” said Jose Caridade Fernandes, who was elected president last year and first made it to the club committee as general secretary in 1974. It all started in 1964 when Union Club of Quitula took interest in football, badminton, carrom, throwball and volleyball. In August, 1971, Union Club of Quitula was renamed as Quitula SC, but the most significant year for the club is 1972 when the Confraria of Our Lady of Piety Chapel, with president Francisco De Sa, entered into a 99-year lease agreement with the club. Six hundred sq mts of land was allotted to the club – renamed yet again as Quitula SCC in 2015 – which ensured that the majestic House was in place four years later. No wonder the village is celebrating. “When we built our Club House, it was one of a kind. Even Mapusa didn’t have facilities like us with an indoor badminton court,” said Rosario Fernandes, former president who led the club for nearly two decades. For its impressive Club House and all that they have achieved, Quitula became famous for producing two international footballers. The most famous of them is legendary Vasco SC forward Bernard Pereira, while his cousin, Arthur, also donned India colours. “We played barefoot as youngsters,” said Bernard of A-B-C-D fame, now settled in Mumbai. “I played when I was 17 or 18 years old and my village club will always remain dear to me.” With Bernard being the most lethal, Quitula had a strong football team, made up of locals and African returnees. Cricket was also encouraged as the Quitula ground was one of the few places in the state where cricket was played. The club, though, remains known for its football and footballers. Goa Football Development Council (GFDC) trainees Hansel Coelho and Bidesh Bhonsle were selected for the Sesa Academy and are currently playing for FC Goa’s developmental team. Narendra Naik was picked up by Reliance Foundation Young Champs (RFYC), Mumbai. Tarak Khanolkar is with Dempo SC, while Vishal Vishwakarma is at the GFDC Residential Academy in Margao and Harsh Patre is on duty with Indian Arrows, the developmental team of the All India Football Federation. Quitula have had its doubters in the past. When money was hard to come by, many doubted how the Club House would take shape. But the club weathered all storms over the years. From starting off in a chapel corridor where meetings were held every month to having a Club House of their own, Quitula have come a long way.
