(File)Panaji: Former Goa transport minister Pandurang Raut passed away on Monday after a brief illness, sources close to his family said. He was 76.Raut was not keeping good health for some time. PANAJI: AAP has slammed the BJP government for increasing the water tariffs after announcing free water to Goans last year before the elections and demanded an immediate rollback of the hike. State President Amit Paleka attacked the government by calling the free water promise just another hoax like every other jumla of BJP. “BJP made a ‘jhooth ka vaada, paani ka daam jyaada’, just like it’s fake ‘har ghar jal’ certification when there are no taps or dry taps.” Velim MLA Cruz Silva recalled that AAP functionary and Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chaddha had reacted to CM Pramod Sawant’s promise last year of giving 16,000 litres of water free by stating ‘Nakkal mein bhi akkal chahiye’. Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas demanded an immediate rollback of the hike, along with the scrapping of the notification of an annual hike of 5%. “Announcing free water before elections and then increasing the water tariff after elections shows that the BJP government intended to cheat Goans for their votes,” he said. BJP should use the taxpayers money to give minimum basic amenities to taxpayers, like free water and electricity, he said.

PANAJI: Chief minister Pramod Sawant on Sunday said that the real tribute to Mahatma Gandhi would be to practice swadharma, swadeshi and swabhasha. Goa is known for unity and Hindus, Muslims, Christians and people of other religions stay peacefully together in the state, he said. After paying tributes to Mahatma Gandhi at Old Goa on his 153rd birth anniversary, Sawant said, “Goans should work together to preserve this unity and work for the development of the state.” The chief minister said that Goa should not remain behind when Prime Minister Narendra Modi is working towards building a new India. It is Mahatma Gandhi’s thoughts that have inspired the Prime Minister to start the ‘Clean India’ campaign, he said. Sawant said that on October 2, 2020, the state government started Swayampurna Goa. “I am confident that Goa will become self-sufficient,” he said. Recently, the state government launched Swayampurna bazaar to give a platform to locals to sell their goods.

Calangute: Calangute MLA Michael Lobo on Sunday said that he has handed over a memorandum to chief minister Pramod Sawant asking for reduction in beach shack fees because of the uncertainty over the arrival of foreign charter tourists. He also said that tourism minister Rohan Khaunte has assured him that the fees will be reduced. Lobo said the shacks reliant on foreign tourists have not been getting business with no charter flights in the last two seasons. “Till now there is no sign of foreign charters. They have asked for (landing) slots but till now there is no confirmation,” he said.

Margao: Chief minister Pramod Sawant on Sunday urged all elected representatives of panchayat bodies to work towards the goal of making Goa as well as every individual “swayampurna” (self-sufficient).“Enough of building gutters and roads. For the last 60 years we have been building only gutters and roads,” Sawant told panchayat members while addressing the gathering at Provedoria’s renovated asylum for the mentally ill at Majorda.“Elected representatives should now work to take the benefits of various schemes under the central government’s ‘atmanirbhar Bharat’ and that of the state government to the last man in society. Let every fisherman, flower vendor, milkman from each ward benefit from the schemes. Let every person from every ward be insured.” Sawant said that Goa has been witnessing unprecedented infrastructure development since 2014. And with the central government now sanctioning over Rs 2000 crore for highway projects, there will hardly be any project left pending from Pernem to Canacona once these works are completed.Reacting to a remark by local MLA Alexio Sequeira, who spoke ahead of Sawant, that the inauguration of the Provedaria’s asylum was a fulfilment of one of his poll promises, the chief minister assured him that all of the assurances given by him to the people will be fulfilled by the government before the end of his tenure. Sequeira was among the eight Congress MLAs who joined BJP recently.

Centre sanctions highway projects worth Rs 2,200 crore for Goa

PANAJI: CM Pramod Sawant on Saturday said that road projects worth Rs 2,228 crore have been sanctioned for Goa by the Union ministry for road transport and highways (MoRTH). The projects approved include a six-lane highway on stilts at Porvorim, a four-lane highway expansion from Navelim to Cuncolim, and a four-lane bypass from Mashem to Pollem in Canacona. “Under PWD, we had asked for sanction for different projects. I want to thank PM Narendra Modi and minister for MoRTH Nitin Gadkari for sanctioning the projects. For disaster management also, funds have been released to the state,” said Sawant. The Navelim to Cuncolim highway has received a sanction of Rs 361 crore, while the Mashem to Pollem bypass will be constructed at a cost of Rs 177 crore. The Porvorim highway on stilts is a long-awaited project. Work of highway expansion that began in late 2016 is expected to be complete from Patradevi up to Karaswada and Verna (including one lane of the new Zuari bridge) by December 2022. Only a stretch of around 3km in Porvorim remains to be expanded. Presently, due to this pending work at Porvorim, traffic movement continues to be affected at the bottleneck between the Sangolda junction and Mall de Goa. In mid-2018, work on the project had commenced, but around 32 owners of houses and commercial establishments approached the Supreme Court, citing faulty land acquisition procedure. Now, a settlement has been reached in the matter. Officials are now targeting December 2025 for possible completion of the highway on stilts in Porvorim.
