Panaji: Senior forest officials on Thursday carried out an inspection of alleged illegal clearings in a private forest in Assagao, following complaints from locals. The Goa Green Brigade had written to the department alleging that an area identified as a private forest by the state panels is being cleared of its green cover. During an inspection, forest officials recorded the cutting down of some trees in this forest. “Owners of the property in Assagao village have recently cleared a large number of bushes, which is part of the rich biodiversity and its ecosystem and we now fear that they are attempting to clear/cut private forest cover which has been identified by Goa government constituted Thomas Committee,” Goa Green Brigade coordinator Avertino Miranda said in his complaint. He told the forest department that as the matter related to confirming the identified private forest in Goa is still being heard by the National Green Tribunal, the forest department should take a serious note of the ongoings in the land in Assagao. Member of Goa Green Brigade Orlando Braganza said that the forest department should conduct regular patrolling of the area to ensure that owners of the property do not cut down trees, which can affect the biodiversity of the Assagao.
