Defaulting Curchorem traders to face action

Staff ReporterCurchoremShopkeepers in Curchorem market who have failed to pay the property tax will face action of attachment of goods and property as the chief officer has issued directions to the assistant market inspector Dhiraj Sawant in this regard. The issue was also discussed during the recent council meeting. The recovery was pending as some shopkeepers had approached the High Court in respect of ‘unjustified’ property tax. However, the court has ruled in favour of CCMC and now the civic body authorities will attach the property ofthe shopkeepers.Presently the ‘form of warrant’ has been issued against Ghanshyam and Kunjan Kamat, who owe more than `4.8 lakh, one Sanjay Dessai owing more than `3.5 lakh, one Bhavani Shankar of Manappuram Finance owing more than `3.9 lakh, Bhavani Shankar Rao owing `4.48 lakh, Kashinath Damodar Mopkar owing `4.79 lakh and Alexio Fernandes, India Infoline Finance Ltd owing `2.29 lakh.In the form of warrant, chief officer Manohar Karekar has mentioned that the shopkeepers have not shown satisfactory reason for nonpayment of property tax which is liable under Section 147 and the 15-day period given for the payment has elapsed. Hence, the assistant market inspector has been directed to attach the goods/ property of the shopkeepers worth the dues.
