Cuncolim traders group demands resignation of CMC chairperson

Quepem: The Cuncolim Traders Association (CTA) has demanded that the chairperson of the Cuncolim Municipal Council (CMC) Laxman Naik should step down immediately. Naik is accused of having an indifferent approach towards the various issues affecting the business community of Cuncolim and failure to resolve the issues. Addressing a public meeting, the association said Naik has been cold shouldering the community and at times, making personal attacks directed at CTA office bearers, whenever approached with grievances. The CTA had convened a public meeting to highlight the issue of rehabilitation of shop owners on national highway and on the Cuncolim-Quepem road, which are likely to be demolished in the near future and who were promised shops in the newly constructed commercial building. The promised rehabilitation in the new building has been thrown into cold storage with the civic body now proposing to auction the shops while there has been no mention of the rehabilitation of the 21 shops which are likely to face the axe.

Ponda: Power minister Ramkrishna ‘Sudin’ Dhavalikar said that India’s biggest achievement is that it continues to be the largest and most vibrant democratic country in the world. He was speaking after unfurling the tricolour to mark the 74th Republic Day at a programme held at Government Sports Complex, Borimol, Quepem.Stating that Republic Day is an occasion to remember all those who laid down their lives for the nation, Dhavalikar said that democracy is strengthened due to the Constitution provided by B R Ambekar. “India is recognised as a vibrant democracy in the world. The progress made by the country in the last 74 years was only due to the Constitution. The Constitution gave due justice to all the constituents,” he said.“The country has done exceptional work in every field, be it infrastructure, water supply, water resources, education, justice system or the arts. It is the responsibility of every citizen to stop the unconstitutional things that happen while considering the security of the country,” he added.He said that though Goa was liberated in 1961, 14 years after India gained independence, the state has done “exceedingly well in all the fields”.

Various tourism projects planned in Quepem: Min

Margao: A number of tourism development projects are in the works in Quepem constituency.Development of Datta temple at Quepem and the promenade by the Kushawati river is among the major projects that are planned by the tourism department. This was stated in a written reply tabled in the House by tourism minister Rohan Khaunte to a legislative assembly question by Quepem MLA Altone D’Costa. The project is estimated to cost Rs 61 lakh.Beautification and Illumination of Holy Cross and viewpoint at hill top at Quepem costing an estimated Rs 1.2 crore is also among the works planned, the reply added. The proposal for beautification of Canaguinim beach with benches and toilet block is also being processed, the reply further stated. As the access road passes through a private property, the NOC from the stakeholder concerned is being obtained, Khaunte further said in the reply.Besides, infrastructure development works estimated at over Rs 4 crore are under way in Balli, Morpirla and Barcem villages of Quepem constituency, which are in various stages of completion, the reply added.

Starting today, Goa restarts Covishield drive

PANAJI: Due to the recent global surge in covid cases and the detection of a new variant that has been categorised as a variant of concern (VOC), the directorate of health services has decided to restart its Covishield vaccination campaign for the adult population at select government facilities from Wednesday.Vaccination will be free and done twice a week — Wednesday between 9am and 4 pm and Saturday between 9am and 12 pm — till February 9, or until the vaccine stock runs out.Vaccination will be undertaken at the community health centres of Canacona, Sanquelim and Pernem. Also, at the primary health centres of Quepem, Ponda, and Chimbel, and the urban health centres of Margao, Vasco, Panaji, and Mapusa, and at the Goa Medical College. Prioritisation and sequencing of the precautionary dose will be based on the completion of six months after the second dose was administered either on or before July 17, 2022. For international travellers, a gap of three months will be considered.The official said that those who have received two doses of Covishield will be administered a Covishield dose as a precautionary dose.The registration will be on the spot. Beneficiaries have been asked to present their final vaccination certificate along with phone number and identity proof used for previous vaccination.

Crimes against women on the rise in South Goa

Margao: Crime statistics obtained from the South Goa police reveal that there has been a rise in incidents of rape and kidnapping in the district over the last few years. In 2022, 34 cases of rape were registered in South Goa. The highest number of cases, seven, were booked at Verna police station, followed closely by Vasco with six. Maina Curtorim and Colva police stations registered four cases of rape each in 2022, while Cuncolim and Fatorda police stations booked three cases each. Canacona and Ponda police stations booked two cases each of rape in 2022, while one rape case each was booked at Margao, Quepem and Sanguem police stations.What’s significant however is that the police have succeeded in arresting the accused in each of the 34 cases.Thirty incidents of kidnapping were booked in South Goa in 2022. Police have been able to crack 27 of these, while investigation is underway in the remaining three cases. Vasco and Verna police stations booked the highest number of cases, each booking seven offences. Maina Curtorim police station booked five cases of kidnapping followed by Colva police station with three. Two cases each were booked by Fatorda, Quepem and Ponda police stations.
