CM says Nanus Fort, Deepaji Rane’s house will be restored, seeks people’s support

Valpoi: Chief minister Pramod Sawant on Thursday assured to restore Nanus Fort to its former glory with the support of the people.“Deepaji Rane, who staged the first revolt against the Portuguese in 1852, will be annually honoured with a guard of honour at the fort,” he said. Sawant was addressing a gathering at the fort on the occasion of the Republic Day. A guard of honour was also presented for the first time at the historic fort located in Sattari taluka to commemorate the revolt.“Goa was liberated from Portuguese rule on December 19, 1961. The events of 1852 and Deepaji Rane’s achievements should be remembered forever,” he said. The chief minister said the government wants to restore the fort which is currently in ruins. Sawant said that Nanus Fort in Sattari and Deepaji Rane’s house at Kumbharkhan will be restored and given a facelift through the archaeology and public works departments. He urged land owners in the vicinity of the fort to support the state government in terms of acquiring land for the restoration work, approach road, etc. “People may gift the required land or allow the government to acquire the land so that a proposal in this regard can be moved from our side,” said Sawant.“The Archaeological Survey of India or the state archives and archaeology department will be requested to take up the fort’s restoration,” Sawant said.
