Panaji: After losing several of its workers to Trinamool Congress last month, Congress on Tuesday made some gains in Porvorim constituency as several supporters of Independent MLA Rohan Khaunte joined the party. Congress has neither a strong candidate nor a sound base in the suburb where Khaunte has strengthened his hold in the last two terms. For the past few months, the party has been wooing Khaunte, but haven’t got a firm response from him yet. Khaunte on Tuesday admitted that he has been in talks with Congress. “Working in that direction, some of our people have joined Congress. In the days to come, after talking to our supporters, a decision (about me joining the party) will be taken in the interest of Goa,” Khaunte said responding to a query about his plans to join the party. He said that for the past two months he has worked to ensure that all like-minded people come together and fight against those out there to divide secular votes, and to protect Goa’s identity. He said that they were in touch with Congress at the Centre and state level. “All coalition partners have to come together on a common platform to defeat the BJP government and for that to happen we need a majority,” he said. “We are putting bricks to build a wall. In the days to come we will inform you about what’s being done. Right now, I’m an independent candidate, and I can’t join till my term ends,” he said. Khaunte said that they have to ensure that whatever plans that Congress has are defined and definitive — whether it be bringing coalition partners together or regional forces, drawing an election strategy or giving new faces a chance. We have asked Congress to work on those factors, Khaunte said. “We have a role to play in Tiswadi and Bardez and we will play it,” he added. ZP member Gupesh Naik, chairperson of women’s federation, Porvorim, Marina Moraes, Agnel Pereira, panch of Salvador do Mundo, Hemant Borkar, panch of Penhe de Franca, Shyamsundar Kamat, coopted member of Socoro panchayat, Subhash Halarnkar and several others joined Congress in the presence of opposition leader Digambar Kamat and president of Goa Pradesh Congress Committee Girish Chodankar.

PANAJI: Chief minister Pramod Sawant said on Monday that he raised the issue of violence against women in West Bengal at the BJP national executive meeting. He said that even though Bengal’s CM was a woman, there was violence against women there. “I criticised the violence against women in West Bengal. I condemned the act of TMC with regards to rape of women in West Bengal,” he said. He also said that West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee should first understand the meaning of democracy and then go to other states. Sawant said that everyone can come to Goa, but that there should be no anarchy Sawant said that he welcomes political tourism in the state, and that it would gain momentum by February. Sawant said that he twice got the opportunity to speak at the national executive — first, at the time of passing of the political resolution introduced by Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath, and second, on the preparation for the Goa assembly elections. Sawant said that a resolution was also passed that the violence against women in West Bengal should not take place in other states.

  • Goa CM Pramod Sawant: Soon, more steps to fight rising crime against women
  • Times of India

PANAJI: Months after chief minister Pramod Sawant came for sharp criticism for his insensitive remarks on gangrape of minor girls at a South Goa beach, he said on Monday that the state government would soon take more steps towards ensuring women’s safety and security in the state. Sawant, who had earlier dismissed issues of rising crime against women, indirectly admitted the state needs to do more. “We will take more steps towards the safety and security of women in the coming days,” he said at the inaugural function of the National Women’s Parliament, organised by the legislature secretariat and the state government. While he said he feels upset when crimes are committed against women in the state, the chief minister maintained that Goa leads all other states where crime detection is concerned. “Goa has a crime detection rate of 93%. One can’t compare this with other states,” he said. A few months ago, Sawant had told the state assembly after the gangrape of minors that teens, particularly minors, should not be “spending the nights on beaches”. “When 14 year olds stay on the beach the whole night, the parents need to introspect. Just because children don’t listen, we cannot put the responsibility on the government and police,” he had tried to justify. Sawant said resolutions passed at the National Women’s Parliament would be sent to the Goa assembly and to Parliament, too. Highlighting Goa’s achievements, Sawant said the state has accorded 33% reservation for women at the panchayat and zilla panchayat levels, enabling many to become public representatives. He also said Goa is steadily becoming self-reliant, a goal that will be achieved in this, the 60th year of its Liberation. The National Women’s Parliament, he said, has been organised to encourage women in the avenues of business, career, employment, and leadership. He also said that people from all sectors should visit the venue and participate in debates and discussions involving central and state government schemes, and problems faced by women, among other topics. Lauding women for working in all sectors, Union minister for state Shripad Naik exhorted them to come out in large numbers and take the country forward. Benaulim NCP MLA Churchill Alemao, who was also present at the event, urged the chief minister to protect the communal harmony of the state. The National Women’s Parliament comprises participants from Arunachal Pradesh, Maharashtra, Jammu and Kashmir, Delhi, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat. The first day saw sessions on socio-political challenges in women empowerment, women’s status and decision-making power, and women in corporate life.

Panaji: Expressing concern over the rising crimes against women, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant Monday said the state government will take more steps for the safety of women in Goa in the near future.Speaking at the inaugural function of the National Women’s Parliament at the Shyama Prasad Mukherjee stadium at Taleigao Plateau, Sawant said he feels grief, as crimes against women have been increasing in the state. The two-day event has been organised by Goa legislative assembly in coordination with the state government and MIT School of Government, Pune.“It is a matter of concern when crimes against women are increasing. However, it is also important to note that the detection rate with regard to crime cases in Goa is very high. Goa is on top in the country in detecting crimes with 93 per cent detection,” he said.Highlighting various initiatives and schemes, the Chief Minister said the state government has been supporting women to take up self-employment so that they are self-reliant. “Under Swayampurna Goa initiative, the government is working with ten-point programmes, especially focussing on women empowerment. The state government has also launched the website ‘know your schemes’ so that people can take benefits of various schemes,” he said.Sawant said efforts of the government to make Goa self-reliant can be successful in the near future if women support the Swayampurna Goa initiative and avail benefit under various schemes.Union Minister of State for Ports, Shipping and Waterways and Tourism Shripad Naik appealed to the women to pursue their passion and hobbies to become self-reliant.Minister for Arts and Culture Govind Gaude said India can become a superpower in the world if women are empowered with all facilities.Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MLA Churchill Alemao said when we celebrate democracy through a women’s parliament, all should keep aside political differences. He appealed to the government to take measures for maintaining unity among the Goan people.Former minister Nirmala Sawant, executive director of MIT School of Government Rahul Karad and Cortalim MLA Alina Saldanha also spoke on the occasion. Speaker of the state legislative assembly Rajesh Patnekar welcomed the dignitaries.

NT NETWORKMargaoGoa Forward Party chief Vijai Sardesai on Saturday said that his party is weighing all options, including joining forces with the Trinamool Congress, to defeat the BJP in the 2022 assembly elections.Speaking to ‘The Navhind Times’, Sardesai said that he had held talks with the TMC, which sought merge of the GFP in it.“But we disagreed on the merger option as we cannot compromise on the Goan identity. Recently I met and held talks with Trinamool Congress chief and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Goa. She said that we should join hands for the forthcoming assembly elections. The idea is not bad, and doors are not closed to it,’’ Sardesai disclosed. He also said that talks are on with the Congress over alliance formation, and that the ball is now in the Congress’ court.Asked whether the Congress and the GFP have agreed upon certain points, Sardesai said that during the election time political parties in Goa hold talks with each other.“Congress and GFP leaders held talks, which remained inconclusive. The ball is now in the Congress’ court. Alliances work on trust. The Congress – principle Opposition party – has to decide whether it wants pre-poll alliance, and whether it trusts the party it wants to ally with. This is because only pre-poll alliance can have post-poll expectations,” he said.He said that he suggested to form a ‘Team Goa’ front to defeat the BJP at the assembly polls, adding that “I am for alliance formation because if regional parties put up candidates in most of constituencies, then non-BJP votes will get divided, which will help the BJP win.”Such an alliance works in Maharashtra, he pointed out, adding that GFP is a regional party withself-respect.On the other hand, Congress leaders maintained that the matter as regards alliance formation talks is being looked after by party’s Goa desk in-charge and other centralCongress leaders.“I have not held talks with the GFP or other regional parties. Central leaders are holding high-level talks on alliance formation,’’ working president of the Congress in Goa AleixoSequeira said.GPCC president Girish Chodankar maintained that he is not involved in cobbling up alliance to fight the polls, but engaged in strengthening the party.Sources said that senior Congress leaders at the central level have been gathering feedback from grassroots-level workers on forging alliance with the GFP, the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party and the Nationalist Congress Party.A decision may reach by the end of this month, the sources said.

PANAJI: Science and technology minister Michael Lobo on Tuesday said that he is ready to leave BJP if the party does not want him. He said he will win six out of seven seats in Bardez. Lobo was speaking after meeting Goa BJP election in-charge Devendra Fadnavis. “Till now the party has not said that it does not want me. But if it says so, then I will have to look at another party,” Lobo said, adding that he completes 15 years with BJP this December. He added that if the people of Mapusa want him to contest from the constituency he has to go there. “If the people of Saligao want me, then I have to go to Saligao. In Bardez, I will win six out of seven seats.” The Calangute MLA said that he has not asked for the Siolim ticket for his wife Delilah, but that she will contest from the constituency and the people of Siolim will decide. Fadnavis is holding one-on-one meetings with ministers, MLAs, and former MLAs to plan out a political strategy for the party. Lobo said that in his opinion the upcoming assembly polls will see a direct fight between BJP and Congress. “Aam Aadmi Party will make a slight impact in some constituencies, like in Salcete,” he said, adding that Trinamool Congress would make no impact in Goa. “Goans will not accept any political party that is coming from outside and has no base in Goa,” Lobo said, adding that MGP will win around four seats. Lobo declined to comment on a possible BJP-MGP alliance. “Neither can I make a comment on an alliance nor can I make any suggestion on it. The respective party seniors will take the decision,” he said.

Leander Paes favours more jobs to Goan youth

Internationally renowned former Indian tennis player and multiple world record holder LEANDER PAES, who recently joined the Trinamool Congress, is passionate about Goa, where he traces his roots. In an interview with ABDUL WAHAB KHAN, Paes says that more jobs for the Goan youth will help in the growth of the Goan economyQ: Tell me about your achievements since your childhood?I am very blessed to be able to represent our people and our flag for over 30 years by playing global sport for India. In my tennis career, I have won 18 grand slams. I have won Wimbledon and have the world record in Davis Cup and also the world record for India in seven consecutive Olympics. I won an Olympic medal for our country in Atlanta 1996. I come from a family of patriots – my mother was the captain of the Indian basketball team. My father played in the 1972 Munich Olympics for India – he played hockey and won a bronze medal. My mother hails from Bengal and my father is a Goan. My grandfather was born in Assolna and my grandmother in Tolikanto; so my family comesfrom Assolna.Q: Will you be a role model for the Goan youth?I hope that by my example of how I lived my life for the last 48 years, I can motivate and encourage the youth and all our fellow Indians to do our country proud. I feel that with a little bit of hard work and belief in yourself all of us can be champions; and I hope that not just in my professional sporting career, or when I played Davis Cup for the country or when I played the Olympics, but also now that I have retired from tennis and I’m taking this avatar in politics I can motivate and lead by example. Even in this new career, Indians can lead by example and be the best in the world.Q: You made immense contributions to the sports which gave name and fame to you and the country. Now you have retired and entered politics. What will be your role in politics? What should Goans expect from you?In my sport – even though tennis is known to be an individual sport – I’ve excelled in Davis Cup and doubles and mixed doubles, which is a team sport. Same way, I have joined a new team, and I am very grateful to Mamata Didi for giving me this opportunity. I am very grateful to the Trinamool Congress for giving me this opportunity to serve our country and people.Q: How will you empower young people as regards sports, education and in other areas? What are your views on sports infrastructure?I feel that empowering people to be the best that they can be is really an important message in life… There is a need to bring in a policy and regulations on education costs. A smart card scheme may be introduced making education affordable and cost-friendly for our youth. Many different things can be done in the state of Goa for empowerment of the youth and upliftment of people. There is a drinking water shortage in Goa, which needs to be addressed. One out of four young people in Goa don’t have a job. However, there are opportunitiesin Goa for job creation in infrastructure development, corporate businesses and many other sectors. These can be used to make Goa more prosperous. There are so many areas where jobs can be created like roadways, electricity and networks. I feel that creating more jobs for the youth will help the Goan economy grow. Goa also needs to become a safe place and every tourist should feel safe and secure with the strict maintenance of law and order.Q: What are your views on divisive and communal politics?I was born to a Bengali mother and to a Goan father. I consider myself Indian. I was born into a Christian family; where I grew up, the shops in the locality around me were run by Muslim community. Also, there were a large number of Hindus… so for me it’s not about religion, it’s about being Indian. When I played at Wimbledon or at Olympics I played for one flag which was saffron, white and green. I represent the largest democracy in the world. The same attitude comes into my new career in politics. It’s not about religion; for me it’s about India. It’s about our people – one united democratic people.Q: Will you lead the TMC in Goa? How many seats do you expect the TMC will win so that it could form government?Like I said earlier, I work as a team and hence I listen, discuss and ideate with my team. As far as your question on whether I will lead the TMC, the party will let you know through the captain of our team. Now that I have retired from tennis I have time and passion and energy to come to my roots and create a better state, where we can lead by example. I have the passion to work hard to please not just myself but our people, my team and Mamata Didi. It is too early to comment on as how many seats the TMC will win.

NT NETWORKPondaIn a U-turn, senior MGP leader Ramakrishna ‘Sudin’ Dhavalikar on Monday said that there was no scope for MGP- BJP alliance as the central committee of the party is of the view that MGP should not join BJP at any cost. “We have committed suicide trice by joining hands with BJP, giving them chance to form the government but the BJP has ditched us again and again. Hence, the party does not want to commit the same mistake again,” Dhavalikar said, while speaking to media at Dharbandora on the sidelines of election campaigning for their Sanvordem candidate Balaji Gauns. Speaking further, Dhavalikar stated that there is an anti-BJP wave in Goa and people want change in the governance, which will be visible in the 2022 Assembly polls. Secondly, he, said, the decision on the alliance is taken by the party’s central committee and “I am bound to respect the decision.”Meanwhile, Dhavalikar claimed that his statement over alliance, on Sunday, was not typically related to BJP alone but was a general statement for other parties that could be willing to join hands with the MGP.He also stated that media persons were asking him about the alliance with BJP repeatedly and sometimes it becomes troublesome. On Sunday, Dhavalikar had said that MGP was ready to ally with any political party, if that party leaves 12 Assembly seats for the MGP in the 2022 assembly polls.“If any party is ready to keep 12 seats for the MGP, then it (MGP) will form an alliance with that party – it could be BJP, TMC, Congress or the AAP. Whichever party wants to form an alliance with the MGP it will have to leave 12 seats for us. If the BJP is ready to do so, we are ready to hold talks on alliance with it,” Dhavalikar had said.

No scope for MGP-BJP alliance, says Dhavalikar
