Goa: Hyderabad tourist admitted to GMC after taking drugs

PANAJI: A Hyderabad man on holiday in Goa was admitted to GMC on Tuesday after he complained of uneasiness following consumption of a narcotic substance. He was later discharged. The 30-year-old arrived in Goa with three friends last week. They completed their BTech and are exploring employment opportunities. Police said that as soon as they arrived at Goa International Airport, they took a taxi to go to Calangute and the cabbie allegedly sold them the narcotic substance. "We are inquiring into the incident," a senior police officer said. After consuming the narcotic, the man complained of uneasiness, following which he was shifted to GMC for treatment. Police said that during inquiry with his friends at the hospital, one revealed that he consumed a narcotic. Immediately, GMC police informed their Calangute counterparts about the incident. While Calangute police requested the executive magistrate to record the youth’s dying declaration, the youth recovered and was discharged. The executive magistrate submitted his report to the deputy collector. Last month, a 21-year-old student from Puducherry died after attending a party along the North Goa coastal belt.

PANAJI: Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC) is all set to inaugurate the cable-stayed footbridge linking Mala to the EDC Patto complex on September 30. The cable-stayed bridge will be called Gyan Setu as it provides students and pedestrians in Mala with direct access to the central library. The iconic pillar of the bridge, which is adorned with the Tricolour, will be known as Gyan Stambh. The Rs 7.5 crore pedestrian bridge is complete and will be thrown open by the end of this week, said GSIDC officials. The three-metre wide structure was completed on the eve of Independence Day and only the final touches were left. "We completed the bridge on a fast-track basis. Just last week, the Smart City advisory committee took a review of the project where we gave a presentation on this bridge," said a senior GSIDC official. GSIDC had floated the tender for the bridge in August last year under the Smart City Mission's proposal to encourage non-motorised and pedestrianisation in the city. The bridge has a ramp to enable the differently-abled to use it without any hassles. The 99m-long bridge has a 50m span over the Rua de Ourem creek. In keeping with the ongoing Azadi ka Amrut Mahotsav celebrations in the country, GSIDC has painted the Tricolour atop the sole pylon of the bridge. As of now, there are three vehicular bridges over the creek, while a single pedestrian bridge connects the old town of Panaji with EDC's Patto complex. The pedestrian bridge is coming up next to the unique mangrove boardwalk behind the library and is expected to become a tourist spot, GSIDC officials said.
