PANAJI: The Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority (GCZMA) has cleared the decks for the creation of co-working spaces proposed by the department of information technology near four beaches-Ashvem, Morjim, Miramar and Benaulim. The idea first came up as the concept of 'workation' became popular during the pandemic. At Miramar, the co-working space will be created near the Manohar Parrikar Samadhi complex, while in the case of Morjim there will be a co-working space cum turtle nesting interpretation centre, as this stretch of the coast in Pernem sees nesting by Olive Ridley turtles. The GCZMA expert member said in his report that many tourists visit Morjim thinking they will be able to witness turtle nesting but cannot as the activity takes place at night. Therefore, these tourists can be offered an interpretation centre near the co-working space. "We need to be careful with the approach to the Morjim site. At the time of construction, care must be taken to ensure that no harm to the beach profile and its vegetation cover is caused. The beach is known for turtle nesting. The proposed site falls in the sustainable tourism zone as per the Sea Turtle Nesting Habitat Management Plan," the GCZMA expert member said, based on which report the authority granted its NOC for the co-working space. Part of the co-working space may be converted into the sea turtle information centre and be managed by the Goa forest department to promote and create awareness about sea turtles and responsible tourist behaviour, GCZMA said. The space identified for co-working is presently used to store shack material during the rainy season and the GCZMA has said that an understanding can be struck with shack owners, who will benefit from the working space through sale of food and beverages. It has, however, said that the structure must be strictly on stilts and wooden as proposed by the department of IT. In the case of the co-working space at Miramar, adjoining the Manohar Parrikar Samadhi, the IT department has been asked to take care to ensure there is no damage to the beach ecosystem at the time of construction and thereafter and efforts are to be made to keep the surrounding as natural as possible without harm to the beach vegetation. The co-working space at Benaulim will come up in front of the Tourism Information Facilitation Centre where facilities already exist for parking, toilets, etc. Similarly at Ashvem, the space chosen is partially a parking area, while part of it is being used by fishermen to park their boats .
